Cannes Festival Selection Result List Announced in June

Cannes Film Festival organizers will announce the list of films that will be selected to participate in the event in early June. However, regarding the event, the Cannes committee should rule out the possibility of physically organizing the annual festival as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Instead, Cannes has decided to join film festivals in other cities such as Venice, Toronto, Deauville, Angouleme, San Sebastian, New York, Busan, and Lyon.

"Until now, physical performances seem to be difficult to hold. So we will continue by announcing the list of selected films in early June," said a spokesperson for the Cannes Film Festival, as quoted from the Variety page.

The spokesperson's statement also confirmed the same thing that was conveyed by Cannes Director Thierry Fremaux on Sunday (10/5) to Screen Daily.

Instead of holding a virtual festival, the Cannes committee chose to move the screening of its films outside the Cannes schedule by collaborating with similar festivals in other cities. For example, the Venice Film Festival, where discussions on this matter have been carried out by both parties.

"Cinema and related industries are under threat. We will rebuild, reaffirming the importance of keeping films showing through energy, unity and solidarity," said Fremaux.

Cannes, continued Fremaux, will not announce all films that have entered the selection, but only a few that are scheduled to be shown in theaters this month until next spring. The film will then be labeled "Cannes 2020".

Meanwhile, the film selection process for next year's Cannes Festival will begin in the fall. Films that have been selected for this year's event but have been postponed for a year will be considered for entry into the Cannes Festival 2021.

The 19th Mise-en-scène Short Film Festival will hold its opening ceremony on June 24, and it will run until July 1. All programs from this festival will be shown on the Naver TV channel Mise-en-scene Short Film Festival.
