Recently, the Hon'ble Education Minister informed that all the educational institutions will be opened after March 30. Preparations are underway to re-introduce classes in educational institutions across the country in compliance with the health rules. This initiative of the government to reopen the school by bringing all the officials and employees involved in the educational institution including teachers and students under vaccination is certainly commendable.

We all understand that there has been some serious damage to education due to the closure of educational activities in the face-to-face classes for a long time. However, in addition to these losses, there has also been a big gain. In this article, I will talk about the many disadvantages of education as well as the benefits.

There is no denying that being out of class for long periods of time has created a huge learning gap for students. Students have advanced to the next class without acquiring many of the required learning skills of the past year. If this learning deficit is not remedied, there is a risk of far-reaching damage. So a definite and long-term plan is definitely needed to overcome this deficit. The plan should include instruction to acquire the learning skills of the current class, including the previous one, so that the students can learn new things as well as the things that they were supposed to learn earlier but could not learn. Being out of formal education has also created emotional distance with the studies of many students. In such a situation, the educational institutions are preparing to reopen after March 30 in compliance with the health rules.

However, with the infrastructural preparation of the school, the teachers need to have clear ideas and instructions on how to get the students back to class and how to work to reduce the learning deficit. Because, much will depend on the role of teachers in compensating for the loss of knowledge and skills lost by students. In many cases, students may have known false and inaccurate information about the epidemic and Kovid-19, and teachers need to work to provide them with accurate information and free them from prejudice. Students have become accustomed to living a routine life due to not coming to school for a long time. Teachers should also make efforts to bring students back to school and study mentally and get them accustomed to routine.

It is estimated that a large number of students may not return to class due to being out of school. Various studies have shown that child labor has increased and the rate of child marriage has increased. The way of life of many families has also changed, as a result of which the children of those families may not return to school. Plans are needed to bring all such students back to class, especially disadvantaged children and various at-risk children back to school.

Classes are being held on Parliament TV as an alternative to face-to-face classes, with teachers of different levels conducting classes using online platforms like Facebook, Zoom, Google Meet. Online classes may not be equally effective across the country on issues such as lack of high speed internet, lack of smart devices, high cost of internet data, etc., but the orientation with class management using online platforms for everyone including teachers and students is not insignificant. I think the experience of conducting classes using the online platform of teacher-student is a great achievement of this time. The cost of learning can be offset by capitalizing on the experience of taking online classes through proper planning.

Teachers will also need new skills to run teaching activities in schools under new circumstances. Free courses and training can be arranged for online teachers to divert students' attention to the classroom, to provide emotional support, and to teach effectively in a short syllabus.

Teachers can also use ICT in the classroom to dispel misconceptions about epidemics, the rules of proper hygiene in school, how to maintain physical distance with friends while sitting in class together, the correct rules for wearing masks, etc. Teachers can also take the help of information technology in the classroom to bring attention back to the lessons and make the class activities enjoyable. Earlier, there was a kind of disinterest of teachers in these matters. As the coronavirus situation has become accustomed to online classes, teachers also seem to have lost the inertia of using ICT.

It seems to be difficult to bring one class to the class one day in accordance with the rules of hygiene and to teach the students in the face-to-face class what was not learned and forgotten in the previous class and to acquire the necessary learning skills of the new class. This will require a lot of time for the teachers and will definitely increase the hard work, yet all the learning needs of the students may not be met. So it is essential to have face-to-face classes as well as online teaching. Teachers from different schools can continue their online classes as they see fit. It will be easier to reduce the learning deficit if there is additional content centrally arranged to supplement the reading of the class as well. Therefore, for the primary and secondary level, various skill-based courses (audio or video) can be created by targeting all platforms such as mobile, radio, television, YouTube. According to the NCTB curriculum, these courses can be designed focusing on language, mathematics, science and other basic skills.
