Covid-19 New Hope Against the U.K. Variant

There are now 20 vaccines in phase 3 trials, seven approved for limited use, and three approved for full use in some countries after fully completing phase 3 trials: the vaccines from Pfizer/BioNTech, Sinopharm, and Moderna. Others, including that from AstraZeneca, have been approved for emergency use in several countries. More approvals are soon to come.
Vaccines are being rolled out around the world, but vaccination rates vary widely between nations. Many have not vaccinated a single person yet. Israel, with 22.1% of its population fully vaccinated, is the leader in the global rollout, followed by United Arab Emirates and Seychelles, according to research from Our World in Data. The United States is sixth, with 2.1% of its population fully vaccinated, and 8.4% partially vaccinated.

AstraZeneca vaccine protects against U.K. variant
Preliminary research released on Friday shows that the vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford is protective against the coronavirus variant from the U.K. known as B.1.1.7. This variant is troubling because it is more transmissible than the original strain and thereby can cause a rise in new infections and deaths, and it has already been detected in 70 countries. The preprint, which has not yet been peer reviewed, shows that the AstraZeneca vaccine has 74.6% efficacy against the variant (for comparison, it has 82.4% efficacy against the original strain). This is promising news, though limited in scope; the effectiveness of the AstraZeneca vaccine against the South African variant B.1.351, the other major variant currently in circulation, was not assessed in this study.
Moderna’s simple fix to speeding up vaccine delivery
As rollout across the United States lags, vaccine maker Moderna is seeking approval for a plan to speed up vaccine delivery: Fill its vials with up to 50% more doses. Currently, each vial holds enough vaccine for 10 doses, but it may be possible to fit enough for 15, as CNBC first reported on Friday. This change, noted the New York Times, could add tens of millions of doses and be approved within weeks.
Israel is doing a great job vaccinating, but Palestinians are being left out
As mentioned earlier, Israel is leading the world in vaccinating its population, to great effect: Early research suggests that new cases, hospitalizations, and the number of critically ill people are dropping in people over the age of 60, who were the first to be vaccinated. It’s powerful evidence of the value of mass vaccination. But human rights groups have raised concerns about the uneven distribution of the vaccine among people living in Israel, in particular Palestinians, who have yet to receive the first dose of the vaccine. The Guardian reports that vaccines delivered to the West Bank are “only distributed to Jewish settlers, and not the roughly 2.7 million Palestinians living around them who may have to wait for weeks or months.”
A SoulCycle instructor who got the vaccine underscores inequalities in rollout
Inequalities in vaccination are being seen in the United States, too. On January 29, The Daily Beast reported that a New York-based celebrity SoulCycle instructor, Stacey Griffiths, received the Covid-19 vaccine after claiming she was an “educator,” eliciting harsh criticism. In about half of states, elementary and high school teachers are not eligible to receive the vaccine. Griffiths has since publicly apologized for jumping the line.
