DOLITTLE THE FUN AND EXCITING MAGICAL ADVENTURE OF THE VETERINARIAN

Losing someone very loved is sometimes so painful. But true loss also often brings us to many new things that we have never felt before, as long as we are willing to open ourselves up and not be constantly in sadness.

That's what Dr. John Dolittle ( Robert Downey Jr. ), after the death of his wife, Lily ( Kasia Smutniak ), in a ship accident 7 years ago. Losing a wife he really loved then made this eccentric doctor who could talk to this animal dissolve in sadness, shut himself away from the outside world, and didn't want to have any more contact with humans.

But everything changes when the peace that Dolittle is looking for in his own house is "disturbed" by the arrival of Lady Rose ( Carmel Laniado ), who asks him to come to the palace and heal Queen Victoria ( Jessie Buckley ). Along with the arrival of Tommy ( Harry Collett ), a teenager who wants to heal a squirrel he accidentally shot.

Fear that his residence will be confiscated by the kingdom if he does not help the queen and the resurgence of his desire to treat as a doctor, starting with the squirrel's surgery, then makes Dolittle dare to take the risk to get out of his comfort zone.

However, Dolittle's face was not as simple as treating the queen. There is political intrigue that accompanies it, which leads to the doctor's long journey in search of a previously unspoiled island.

Together with his beloved animals, Dolittle then went on an adventure to save the queen. While looking for answers to the big questions that had been covering him all this time.

Downey's Adventure With His New “Avengers”

As a global superstar who just ended the 11 year saga Tony Stark and the original Avengers with a sweet, to then appear as the main cast of the film he also produced with his wife, Susan Downey , of course quite surprising. Moreover, this film is also the first film chosen by Robert Downey Jr. after Avengers: Endgame , which  of course is intended as a refresher on the image of Tony Stark that has been lingering for 11 years.

Here too, Robert Downey Jr.  actually back to being a team leader. A leader who manages to care for and train his beloved pets to have skills above average and help many people, like the Avengers in animal form.

Dolittle-style Avengers who are then voiced by a row of Hollywood superstars such as Rami Malek as Chee-Chee, a gorilla who has self-confidence problems and excessive fear. Then the duet Yoshi ( John Cena ) and Plimpton ( Kumail Nanjiani ) as a polar bear and an ostrich who have a cute love hate relationship. As well as Dab-Dab ( Octavia Spencer) and Poly ( Emma Thompson ) as the duck and the parrots who are Dolittle's most loyal and talkative assistants.

While also accompanied by other Dolittle assistants such as Jip ( Tom Holland ), a dog who has the skill to smell disease and the giraffe and weasel duet a la Betsy ( Selena Gomez ) and Tutu ( Marion Cotillard ). Completed by the presence of Barry ( Ralph Fiennes ) as a creepy antagonistic tiger but has relationship problems with his mother.

Seeing a little synopsis, big themes, and a line of actors, it is true that Dolittle is actually a family friendly adventure film . The presence of voice actors from class A actors in it certainly reminds us a little of what previous family films such as The Jungle Book (2016) and The Lion King ( 2019) have done.

Forget Dr. Eddie Murphy 's version of Dolittle which brings a new interpretation of the doctor in a comedy film that is hilarious but almost meaningless. Here, Dolittle was later rebooted to become a film that carries the spirit of his classic literature written by Hugh Lofting in 1920.

Set in the Victorian era , this time Dolittle's adventure feels both classic and magical. Dolittle then brings various elements needed from a child-friendly adventure film into a light, fun, funny and meaningful story, just like we are reading sheet by sheet a classic book of children's adventures. While adding fairytale elements in it, which then makes this film look magical and full of imagination.

The CGI element is clearly the main point of this film because in the 80% of the film's portion it relies on CGI to enliven the appearance of the talking animals as well as various settings ranging from the open seas, the exotic island of Monteverde, to the visualization of a hidden island which is the main goal of the doctor. The results are quite satisfying although not arguably the best. Just enough to be able to increase the banging power of the story that is needed.

In terms of acting, Robert Downey Jr . clearly there is no need to doubt its abilities. Here he is able to portray a doctor who is upset and insecure , as well as giving him a strong Welsh accent. An effort should be appreciated, where it is quite successful Me- refresh the image of Tony Starknya.

Meanwhile, for other actors, it seems that there is nothing really special in displaying their acting skills. Including Antonio Banderas and two young actors, namely Harry Collet and Carmel Laniado . Even though the role of Antonio Banderas  can still be maximized again, instead of appearing only briefly and not giving any impression.

Praise, of course, deserves to be pinned to the animal voice actors. Where the actors are quite successful in "hiding" their identities to become one with these characters through their voices.

Particular spotlight is the duet John Cena and Kumail Nanjiani who were able to become the scene stealer of this film thanks to their jokes that were able to churn the stomach. Coupled with the monologue of Kevin the squirrel ( Craig Robinson ), which is minimal in portion but always effective in bringing laughter when it appears in each scene.
