Yes. The first Godzilla (1998) film produced by Hollywood did indeed fail at the box office. Only able to earn USD 379 million. In fact, swallowing a budget of up to USD 150 million. Classified as very large at that time. The critics also showered him with harsh criticism.

Fortunately, however, Gareth Edwards' film Godzilla (2014), apparently, did not follow in the footsteps of his predecessor. Being able to earn USD 529 million (with a budget of USD 160 million). And got a pretty positive response from critics.

The success of the film produced by Legendary Pictures has also started a new franchise. Namely: MonsterVerse. Which will tell the various ancient monsters. Which, the plan, will bring Godzilla with King Kong next year!

However, before the two giant monsters fought, this year, Legendary first released Godzilla II: King of the Monsters. Which is the third film from MonsterVerse. To be precise, after Godzilla (2014) and Kong: Skull Island (2017).

The director, this time, is no longer Gareth Edwards, but Michael Dougherty. The 44-year-old filmmaker became known after refining the fantasy horror comedy Krampus (2015).

Dougherty's Godzilla II film is set in real time. That is, it takes place five years after the events in the first film (2014). At that time, Godzilla fought a pair of MUTO (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms). Alias giant monsters that live under the surface of the Earth.

It is said, after causing great chaos in San Francisco in 2014, then disappearing to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, in this second film, Godzilla reappears. The giant reptile fought another great monster. Namely: King Ghidorah. Which has become his main rival since millions of years ago.

Ancient creatures that were previously only considered mythical are reviving. The giant three-headed dragon-like monster threatens the survival of mankind. Godzilla must defeat his evil enemy. To save the world.

As the name implies, King Ghidorah has indeed become a kind of king for monsters. All obeyed. Except, Godzilla and Mothra. Therefore, Godzilla had to conquer it. In order to become the King of the Monsters.

However, King Ghidorah was extremely strong. As if invincible. Like the three dragons belonging to Daenerys Targaryen in the Game of Thrones series, Ghidorah also has wings and can fly. Apart from that, it can also regenerate itself quickly. The head can grow again if the neck is cut off.

Beside Ghidorah, there is also Rodan. Namely, a monster that looked like a giant eagle that was very ferocious. Apart from that, there was also Mothra. Who is nicknamed the Queen of Monsters. Which is depicted in the form of a giant butterfly. Whose wings were so beautiful that they glowed. According to legend, Mothra was Godzilla's "girlfriend," aka partner.

According to director Michael Dougherty, the monsters known as Titans did not appear suddenly. They are, in fact, always here. Long before there were humans. The Titans are hibernating at various hidden points. Below the Earth's surface. So, based on the concept of the MonsterVerse franchise, this world, in effect, belongs to them. We're just hitchhiking.

In this blockbuster film with a budget of USD 200 million, the Titans are told to wake up one by one from their long sleep. Each character is depicted very creepy. For kaiju fans, this film will feel satisfying. Besides that, Godzilla's figure is also shown to be more manly. Even though his stomach still looks fat.

Apart from presenting terrible and gigantic monsters, this second Godzilla film is also strengthened by famous stars. Call it Kyle Chandler (Early Edition series), Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring horror franchise), Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water), and Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai). Also, as a sweetener, there is Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi. The super beautiful one.

They all act as scientists from Monarch. The alias of crypto-zoological secret agency. Which specializes in researching and dealing with giant ancient creatures. Starting from Godzilla to King Kong. Which is indeed the common thread of the MonsterVerse film franchise by Legendary Pictures.

In addition to these seasoned stars, the Godzilla II film is also reinforced by a 15-year-old actress who is on the rise. Namely: Millie Bobby Brown. Whose name skyrocketed after starring in the Stranger Things series on Netflix.

According to Millie, the monsters in the Godzilla film are very different from Demogorgon. The monster alias he used to face in Stranger Things. Because the size is indeed on a larger scale. In fact, very, very big. To the point, Millie admitted to having neck pain after filming. Because you always have to look up very high.

Meanwhile, when interviewed some time ago, director Michael Dougherty said, this latest Godzilla film will be more tense than the previous film. Which was refined by Gareth Edwards. In fact, Dougherty revealed, this film has horror elements. Although not a horror film.
