US biotechnology firm Moderna on Monday said lab studies showed its Covid-19 vaccine would remain protective against variants of the coronavirus first identified in the United Kingdom and South Africa.

Kawhi Leonard scored a game-high 34 points as the Los Angeles Clippers extended their season-high NBA win streak to seven games with a 108-100 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday.

Leonard shot 14 of 24 from the floor and finished with nine rebounds and eight assists while Ivica Zubac came off the bench to score 10 points and grab 11 rebounds for the Clippers, who beat Oklahoma City for the second time in three days.

Serge Ibaka tallied 17 points, Reggie Jackson finished with 14 and Paul George scored 11 for the Clippers, who matched the LA Lakers for the best record in the league at 13-4.

George spent two seasons with the Thunder before being traded to the Clippers prior to the 2019-20 season.

Nicolas Batum, whose wife gave birth to a baby girl on Friday, scored seven points in the win.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 23 points, seven assists and six rebounds for the Thunder, who lost their third in a row after having last Sunday's game against Philadelphia postponed.

George Hill scored 22 points and Hamidou Diallo had 14 points for Oklahoma City.

The Thunder cut the Clippers lead to six points, 102-96, with just under two minutes left on a basket by Gilgeous-Alexander. But Leonard helped clinch the victory by scoring on a dunk with 42 seconds remaining.

-

The Clippers grabbed a big lead early just like they did in Friday's win over the Thunder. Los Angeles compiled a 17 point lead in the opening quarter before the Thunder reduced that to eight with just over four minutes left in the second. The Clippers regained control to take a 56-45 lead into the half.

-

Leonard, who scored 11 points in the third quarter, hit a jumper at the end of the third to give the Clippers a 85-73 lead.

The Clippers won despite struggling from three-point range, hitting just 14 of 46. The Thunder were even worse, making just seven of 35 from beyond the arc.

Los Angeles played without forward Marcus Morris who sat out with a unspecified illness.

Milan's giants will do battle in the Italian Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday after a disappointing weekend of Serie A action for Italy's top two teams.

-

League leaders AC Milan were swept away 3-0 by Atalanta at the San Siro on Saturday, at the same time as second-placed Inter Milan could only manage a goalless draw at Udinese which leaves them two points behind their city rivals.

-

The teams' star strikers Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Romelu Lukaku, who have each bagged 12 goals this league campaign, both drew a blank at the weekend but will be hoping for more from the second meeting this season between the two teams.

-

Milan's veteran forward Ibrahimovic scored a brace the last time they met in a 2-1 league win in October, with Lukaku also netting for Inter.

-

Ibrahimovic returned for Milan this month after seven weeks out injured, scoring a brace against Cagliari, and is looking for his first Cup goal of the season.

-

Lukaku headed in an extra-time winner against Fiorentina in the last 16, but the Belgium forward has failed to score in Inter's last four league games.

-

Their trophy hopes now lie on domestic success after their early European exit.

"Winning the Scudetto and qualifying for the Champions League would be significant for Inter, but the Italian Cup is a trophy that we respect," said coach Antonio Conte.

-
"We won't be taking it lightly and will try to win, as we always do."

Inter's last major trophy was the 2011 Italian Cup, while Milan -- who last won the league that same year -- have not tasted success in the competition since 2003.

-

Making it through to the last four by beating such strong opposition on Tuesday would be huge after their limp defeat by Atalanta.

-

"The Italian Cup derby could bring us to the semi-finals but above all it's an opportunity to immediately turn the page and avoid a difficult emotional crisis," said Milan coach Stefano Pioli.

-

Holders Napoli are also looking for a lift Thursday as they take on Serie A newcomers Spezia, who dumped Roma out of the tournament last week.

-

Gennaro Gattuso's side lost the Italian Super Cup to Juventus last week and fell 3-1 at Hellas Verona in Serie A on Sunday.

Juventus, winners of four of the last six Italian Cups, take on the only Serie B side remaining, SPAL.

-

Atalanta -- whose only major trophy was the Italian Cup in 1963 -- host Lazio, winners in 2019, with the two sides set for a return trip again next weekend in the league.

-

Winners go through to a two-legged semi-final on February 3 and 10, with the final on May 19.

France probably needs to move into a third lockdown, perhaps as early as the February school holidays, because of the circulation of new variants of the virus, the government's top medical adviser on COVID-19 policy said on Sunday.

-

French schoolchildren have two weeks off in February, but the entire month is a holiday month as three different zones stagger the start of their holidays by one week, with the first starting on Feb. 6.

-

"We probably need to go towards a confinement. Whether that needs to be a very strict confinement like the first one in March or a softer form like in November, that is a political decision," Jean-François Delfraissy, head of the scientific council that advises the government on COVID-19 response, told BFM television.

-

The government will meet on Wednesday to decide whether it needs to take extra measures.

"If we do not tighten regulations, we will find ourselves in an extremely difficult situation from mid-March," Delfraissy said.

He said it would make sense to make the new lockdown coincide with upcoming school break and to extend the holidays by at least a week.

-

On Jan. 16, France brought forward the start of a nightly curfew to 1800 CET for at least two weeks in a bid to slow down the spread of the virus, but since then the average number of new infections has increased from 18,000 per day to more than 20,000.

-

Delfraissy said the arrival of the more contagious UK, South African, Brazilian and now Californian variants have completely changed the pandemic situation in the past three weeks.

"These new variants are the equivalent of a second pandemic," he said.

-

He said data shows the UK variant is already at levels of 7% to 9% of cases in certain French regions, notably the Paris region and that it is now unstoppable, as it is being spread by French people, no longer just by people coming from Britain.

He said the one bright point was the vaccination campaign.

"In the three months from early February to end April, we will have a race between the arrival of the UK variant and vaccinating as many people as possible," he said.

-

He said he expects France will probably vaccinate 6 million to 8 million people by mid-April but added that Health Minister Olivier Veran's forecast of 70 million vaccinations by the end of August was unlikely to come true.

"I think we can vaccinate about 40% of the population by the end of summer, but not more," he said.
