Turner shares how he trimmed down in effort to be more mobile and durable

For the last four or five years, Justin Turner said his goal of getting around or under 200 pounds would always plateau at 201 or 202. That’s no longer the case.

In an effort to stay on the field and be more mobile at age 36, Turner returned to the Dodgers this offseason in a noticeably trimmer form after finishing the Whole30 program last Wednesday.

“When my wife, Kourtney, wanted to do this Whole30 diet, I jumped on board and started seeing results right away,” Turner said. “I think I got down as low as 192 at one point. (I’m) working my way back up to right around 200 pounds, and doing it the right way — eating good and eating clean.”

The Whole30 program encourages eating whole, unprocessed foods, including meat, seafood, eggs, vegetables, fruit and natural fats that have a simple list of ingredients while avoiding added sugar, dairy, alcohol, grains, most forms of legumes and baked goods. The idea is to focus on smart food choices for 30 straight days with no cheats or slip-ups, but Turner said it’s probably something he’ll continue beyond those 30 days given the success.

Manager Dave Roberts applauded Turner for the shape he was in entering camp, and he can already see the difference its made defensively this spring.

“I just think Justin is more agile, more mobile than he was all of last year,” Roberts said. “I think he’s just, physically, he’s moving as good as he has in the last few years.”

Turner has posted an OPS better than .830 in each of his seven years as a Dodger, playing in as many as 151 games in 2016 and as few as 103 games in 2018. In that latter season, Turner dealt with a wrist fracture early in the year and a groin strain in July. Last year, Turner played in 42 of 60 games while missing time with a hamstring strain.

“It’s my job to be available every single day Dave puts me in the lineup, and it’s his job to decide how many days he wants me in there,” Turner said. “I’m going to do everything I can to be available every day and not have anything physical be a setback to that.”

Beyond being nimbler defensively, Turner said shedding weight is also allowing him to recover better. The soreness he might’ve felt after a spring game in the past is no longer present.

He’s also not concerned his lighter physique will impact his hitting. He went 2-for-2 in Monday’s 7–3 Cactus League loss to the Mariners and has a .265 batting average this spring.

“I feel good,” Turner said. “Offensively, I feel like I’m in a good spot. Obviously, if I don’t come out hitting a bunch of homers, it’ll probably be everyone trying to equate it to, ‘Oh I lost weight, so I lost my power,’ but I don’t think that’s the case. I feel like I’m trending in the right direction right now and things are starting to come together. Offensively, I’m right where I need to be 10 days from Opening Day.”

Bauer continues build-up

Trevor Bauer retired the first 11 batters he faced Monday, including four by strikeout, while allowing just one hit through his first four innings. Then came a five-run Mariners barrage in the fifth, which included three home runs.

Roberts said Bauer left some pitches out over the plate in the problem inning, but Bauer said he got what he wanted out of the outing by commanding the ball well the first few innings.

“The fifth inning, I was throwing pitches,” Bauer said. “There really wasn’t any thought of sequencing or whatever, I was just out there throwing pitches. That’s never a good mind frame to be in when you’re trying to get guys out, but just finishing out the night getting the pitch count up.”
