While some are alarmed by the requirement for 'patriotic' office holders as part of sweeping electoral changes, others point to Beijing wanting competency to fix socio-economic issues
China's top lawmaking body on Tuesday unanimously endorsed sweeping electoral reforms in Hong Kong. These involve expanding the committee that picks the city's leader, as well as setting up a vetting committee that will decide whether potential office holders are sufficiently "patriotic".
 Rochester Corporation Counsel Tim Curtin, who advised Mayor Lovely Warren and her team during the investigation into the death of Daniel Prude, says he's returning to private practice.

Curtin says he plans on returning to private practice on June 30.

City Council called for Curtain to be fired from the position he's held since 2018 — saying he obstructed city council, the Police Accountability Board, and the Prude investigation.

Curtin has been with the city since 1994.

“I still have a long road ahead of me, but now I have a path,” she told supporters Thursday, the Daily Hampshire Gazette reported. “I hope that all the other immigrants who are waiting for their better day will find it, too.” Kakhtiranova came to the country in 2003 and overstayed her visa. She was granted stays of removal for years until 2017, when she was ordered to leave under former President Donald Trump's administration, the newspaper reported. Kakhtiranova sought refuge in the church instead.

The mother of three said she looked forward to celebrating her 17-year anniversary with her husband and restarting her pierogi-making business.

Kakhtiranova was among more than 70 immigrants nationwide who took sanctuary in churches under Trump. Churches have long been treated as off-limits for immigration enforcement.

Last month, a Guatemalan man left an Amherst church after more than three years, and a Guatemalan woman living in a Bedford church was granted a temporary reprieve to remain in the country.

Following the attack outside the U.S. Capitol on Friday morning, President Joe Biden released the following statement and ordered flags to be flown at half-staff as a sign of respect for the victims of the attack.

As a sign of respect for the service and sacrifice of the victims of the attack at the United States Capitol on Friday, April 2, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, April 6, 2021. President Biden made a statement Friday after an attack on the U.S. Capitol left an officer dead.

U.S. Capitol Police reported Friday afternoon a car rammed a barricade outside the U.S. Capitol, hitting and injuring two of their officers. The incident lead to one officer dead and the driver being shot.

Shortly after, President Biden released a statement expressing his sorrow over the attack and for the officer who died.

Jill and I were heartbroken to learn of the violent attack at a security checkpoint on the U.S. Capitol grounds, which killed Officer William Evans of the U.S. Capitol Police, and left a fellow officer fighting for his life. We send our heartfelt condolences to Officer Evans’ family, and everyone grieving his loss. We know what a difficult time this has been for the Capitol, everyone who works there, and those who protect it.

I have been receiving ongoing briefings from my Homeland Security Advisor, and will be getting further updates as the investigation proceeds. 

I want to express the nation’s gratitude to the Capitol Police, the National Guard Immediate Response Force, and others who quickly responded to this attack. As we mourn the loss of yet another courageous Capitol Police officer, I have ordered that the White House flags be lowered to half-mast.

Gaetz is under investigation for a potential sexual relationship with a 17-year old.
The communications director for U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz abruptly resigned Friday, multiple news outlets confirm.

Luke Ball has dropped any reference to working for Gaetz from his own social media, and the Congressman’s office has confirmed he has left employment.

The departure was first reported by NBC News and other outlets have since received official confirmation.

“The Office of Congressman Matt Gaetz and Luke Ball have agreed that it would be best to part ways,” Gaetz’s office said to Fox News. “We thank him for his time in our office, and we wish him the best moving forward.”

Republican insiders said that’s a significant sign those closest to Gaetz have started worrying for their own reputations, and may not believe his denials regarding an unfolding sex scandal.

The New York Times earlier this week reported the Department of Justice was investigating the Panhandle Republican for potentially trafficking a 17-year-old girl across state lines for sex. Further reporting by the outlet said the investigation stemmed from a federal investigation of former Seminole County Tax Collector Joel Greenberg, and that there’s evidence Greenberg and Gaetz provided gifts and sometimes cash for sex with women found through computer apps.

Sources told the Times that Greenberg introduced the women to Gaetz, a political ally. One woman told investigators she had sex with Greenberg, Gaetz and one other as-yet-unidentified associate in Florida GOP politics, one source said.

Greenberg was indicted in August on a charge of sex trafficking and engaging in a commercial sex act with a subject under the age of 18. The Times story published Friday says that subject is the same 17-year-old at the center of the Gaetz story published two days prior.

The developing story has already started to spur discussion of Gaetz
