Jathagam Kattam

Jathagam is the Tamil word for the birth chart, also known variously as the natal chart, horoscope, or kundali. It is based on this Jathagam that the ancient Indian science of astrology operates; for, it is through its analysis that astrological predictions are made about an individual.

Jathagam Structure:

Jathagam, the horoscope consists of 12 Houses that correspond to the 12 zodiac signs. The time of birth of a person will decide where the first House will fall and in which zodiac sign. Once it is fixed, the other 11 Houses will follow serially and correspond to the various signs accordingly. These 12 Houses, that is, the Jathaga Kattams in Tamil, have their own significance, and each of them represents a few of the significant and influential aspects of life. The zodiac signs which correspond to the different horoscopic Houses have their own planetary Lords. The 9 planets, as they are found in the celestial sphere, are plotted in these Houses. While some of these planets are regarded as auspicious, and some others inauspicious, all these possess their own individual characteristic traits. 

Role of Jathagam 

A Jathagam can be called the blueprint of a person, his or her nature, and life. The reading or the analysis of this horoscope involves the study of - the various Houses, the zodiac signs they correspond to, the placement of the different planets and the planetary Lords of the signs, which planet is placed in which House and sign, which planets aspect, that is, cast their glances on which House and what planet, etc. It also takes into account the Dasa and Bhukti, the major and minor planetary periods prevailing for a person at various points of time in life, for making predictions.

'Jathagam Porutham' is the Tamil terminology that denotes the matching of the horoscopes. It was a time-tested tradition to compare the horoscopes and check for the agreeability between a boy and a girl before deciding to unite in a marital bond. There were 10 such Poruthams which are weighed for the couple's agreeability with each other, and the elders believed that such compatibility, when found, can ensure a good and harmonious life for the two concerned.
