Joe Biden unveiling details of a $2 trillion infrastructure plan

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The day after unveiling details of a $2 trillion infrastructure plan he hopes Congress will approve, President Joe Biden announced that he’ll deputize five members of his Cabinet including Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia Fudge to sell the plan across the nation.

At his first-ever full Cabinet meeting in the White House East Room, Biden announced that he’ll ask Fudge, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, Labor Secretary Marty Walsh, and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo to explain the plan to the American public.

“Working with my team here in the White House, these Cabinet members will represent me in dealing with Congress, engage the public in selling the plan and help work out the details as we refine it to move forward,” Biden told reporters before the Cabinet meeting began.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said the five will be “front and center voices in engaging with members of Congress, with leadership in Congress, with governors, with elected officials, with the American public through media and through other direct communications, also traveling around the country to communicate about this plan that he’s proposed.”

Fudge got an early start on her assignment in a Wednesday interview with television host Roland S. Martin, where she called Biden’s proposal “a once in a century kind of an investment in infrastructure.”

The former Democratic Congress member from Warrensville Heights said the proposal would “address every single thing that we have been talking about for many many years,” including improvements to broadband, energy, the electrical grid, housing, manufacturing and providing care to the elderly and people with disabilities. She said the $40 billion it provides for housing will pay to repair, rehabilitate and stabilize housing for low-income people, and would help build 2 million more units of affordable housing.

“We are talking about putting resources into things that we have not done in ages,” said Fudge. “This is something that I can get excited about because we are finally going to say to people who need a job, we’re going to provide that transportation route for you to get to those jobs, no matter where you live. We’re going to make sure that you live in decent, stable, clean housing. We’re going to make sure that you can take care of your parents and your children. It is historic.”

She responded to criticism from Republicans who objected to the plan’s cost and said the corporate tax increases it contains would force manufacturing jobs overseas by saying, “You cannot outsource jobs to build roads and bridges, you cannot outsource jobs that build moderate income housing ... we’re talking about millions of jobs.”

“This is investing in the people of this country,” said Fudge.

A HUD spokeswoman said Fudge will be making other media appearances to promote the plan in coming days. A statement from Fudge said the plan will create thousands of good paying jobs throughout the country, including in Ohio. Ohio’s roads, buildings and housing will benefit from this investment.

“The President’s plan confirms this Administration’s commitment to creating pathways to homeownership for young people, modernizing aging homes of older and low-income Americans, improving the quality of housing for our children, and prioritizing the creation of sustainable places to live - all while centering people from all backgrounds and all communities,” her statement continued. “This is a historic investment that will advance how we live for generations to come.”
