My Unrevealed Secret Exam Taking Techniques

Before I reveal my secret exam techniques let me first let you know what I do for a living. I am a high school teacher. I love what I do. I want to see every students in my class succeed. My first exam taking technique is that if you know the material, you can answer correctly most of the questions on the exam. After that you can walk through the exams steadily the 1st pass and answer every question which you absolutely know the answer to.

That is an important consideration because often other answers can be found in the following questions, helps prevent you from developing that "oh no, I wasn't ready for this" phobia and confidence goes a long ways. Don't second guess yourself. You know what you know. Trust you instinct.

Another exam taking technique is when studying, ensure you cover any key point touched in class, review the Learning Objectives - also a huge key for exams. Generally speaking, an exam is only supposed to cover a learning objective or it should never be asked unless for extra credit and then it should be related to the topic accordingly.

Use scrap paper - always start a test by knowledge dumping all memorization. This allows you to then focus on the question and not partial focus while trying to remember everything else. Get it on paper while you remember it and then relax and blow through the exam.

If you are struggling with any one area, ensure you are proactive and get clarification ahead of time.

Two types of info passing a test and both end in "knowing the material".

Type 1 - Memorization: memorize it well, use memorization techniques for tables, charts, statistics, etc.

Type 2 - Clear Understanding. More often than not, if you understand a topic well enough to teach it to another then you will not forget it, can easily recall it and even not worrying about any such thing as a trick question.

One thing which you should know about exam taking technique is that, trick questions are not permitted to be asked - if it is tricky then there is a reason for it. The test is testing knowledge and comprehension. Ensure you pay attention to wording to ensure you get the right context of what is being asked.

Other than that - there usually should be no reason to score less than 100% for anyone on anything at which they should have acquired the subject matter. Of course there are rare exceptions.
