#NAYPYITAW, Myanmar (AP)# Suu Kyi’s party urges Myanmars people to oppose coup

Aung San Suu Kyi's political party is urging Myanmar's people to oppose Monday's "coup" and return to a "military dictatorship."

The National League for Democracy said in a statement on its Facebook page that party leader Suu Kyi's actions were unjustified and unconstitutional and against the will of the electorate.

As NLD members did not respond to phone calls, it was not possible to confirm who posted the message.

Myanmar's military television said on Monday that the army had taken control of the country for a year, and that many major politicians inside the country, including Suu Kyi, had been detained.

The host of a military-owned television station, Myawaddy, announced his seizure of power, citing a section of the constitution that was drafted in a military unit that allowed him to take control during a national emergency. He said the seizure was due to the government's failure to respond to allegations that military personnel had rigged the election in November last year and to postpone the election due to the coronavirus crisis.
