Oscars 2021: Best Picture Nominees, from Nomadland to Judas and the Black Messiah

This year the Oscars Awards ceremony promises to be one for the history books! Despite a mentally exhausting pandemic ridden year, the 93rd Academy Awards surprises us with of the most diverse years for nominations yet. Eight exceptional films stand out for the highly coveted Best Picture award this Sunday.

While the Best Actor category brought forward the first-ever Muslim nominee, Riz Ahmed, for his moving performance in Sound of Metal and one of the most acclaimed actresses of her generation, Frances McDormand, for her portrayal of one of the most talked about films of 2021 - Nomadland - let's take a look at what the best picture category brought to the table.

Nomadland

Director Chloe Zhao's drama 'Nomadland' has dominated the category so far during award season. The film earned best film at the BAFTA Awards, best picture drama at the Golden Globes, best picture at the Critics Choice Awards and best film at the Producers Guild Awards.

As we're approaching the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony, we can't wait for the memorable outfits and speeches that come with the event.

Leonardo DiCaprio | The Revenant | 2015
The long-awaited Oscars award for Leonardo DiCaprio was the product of "tireless efforts" and an "unbelievable cast" according to DiCaprio. He took the opportunity to thank his fellow actor Tom Hardy by breaking into a heartfelt bromance declaration and went on the use his role in The Revenant to draw a comparison of man and nature.
"I just want to say this. Making "The Revenant" was about man's relationship to the natural world, a world that we collectively felt in 2015 as the hottest year in recorded history. Our production needed to move to the southern tip of this planet just to be able to find snow. Climate change is real. It is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating.

"We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters or the big corporations, but who speak for all of humanity. For the indigenous people of the world. For the billions and billions of underprivileged people who will be most affected by this. For our children's children. And for those people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed. I thank you all for this amazing award tonight. Let us not take this planet for granted."
Halle Berry | Monster's Ball | 2002
The Monster's Ball protagonist delivered an emotional and powerful speech as the first black woman to ever win the best actress. She took the stage to acknowledge this fact and delivered her speech full of gasps and emotions recognizing the gravity of the historic moment she was in.
"This moment is so much bigger than me," she said. "This moment is for Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne, Diahann Carroll. It's for the women that stand beside me: Jada Pinkett, Angela Bassett, Vivica Fox. And it's for every nameless, faceless woman of colour that now has a chance because this door tonight has been opened.
Joaquin Phoenix | Joker | 2020
This particular Oscars win hit an emotional spot for many people as the movie 'The Joker' evoked such strong emotions of injustice and anger in viewers as they couldn't figure out whether the protagonist deserved our sympathy or wrath. He dedicated his win to "use our voice for the voiceless," and went on to address the "distressing issues that we are facing collectively"
