Technology will become more important for mining in Peru, experts said during a digital transformation forum organized by Rumbo Minero.

Participants agreed that technology will be especially useful for discovering high-grade mineral deposits and for the operation of mines.

Compañía de Minas Buenaventura's innovation manager Ignacio Agramunt said that an important challenge relates to mineral impurities, prompting the need to find higher grade and economically viable deposits with the help of technology.

He added, "technology offers security and productivity."

Agramunt also said that Buenaventura seeks to make its US422mn San Gabriel gold project a digital mine.

“This mine should be the mine of the future.”

Linkminers CEO Emilio Gómez de la Torre said Peru's mining industry is using more digital solutions, especially smart sensors during various stages of the mining process.

Analytics is another important element. It allows to incorporate data into platforms and create predictability models and enables machine learning development.

"Regarding autonomy we are still a bit lagging, but at preceding stages there is strong progress, especially in the presentation of solutions by suppliers," de la Torre said.

According to the experts, staff training poses another challenge and overcoming it will take time.
