Britain’s Queen Elizabeth celebrated on Sunday the sense of Commonwealth unity fostered by “a time like no other”, just hours before a U.S. interview with her grandson Prince Harry and his wife Meghan that could deepen divisions in the royal family. Queen Elizabeth II has highlighted the importance of staying in touch with friends and families during the coronavirus pandemic in her annual Commonwealth Day speech.
In a speech to mark Commonwealth Day, dedicated to the countries mainly from the former British empire that maintain links with Britain, the Queen welcomed the “deeper appreciation of the mutual support and spiritual sustenance we enjoy being connected to others” during the coronavirus pandemic.
“We have all continued to appreciate the support, breadth of experiences and knowledge that working together brings, and I hope we shall maintain this renewed sense of closeness and community,” she said in a televised message.
For almost 50 years, the royal family has attended an annual Commonwealth Day service at London’s Westminster Abbey in March, but it has been cancelled this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prince Charles, joined by other royals including his elder son and heir, Prince William, also broadcast a tribute to the courage shown by people throughout the Commonwealth in response to the pandemic.
The messages air hours before CBS broadcasts the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s highly anticipated tell-all, their first in-depth interview since they moved to the United States.

Britain's monarch also touched on the role of technology in keeping people connected amid the global pandemic, in her royal address broadcast 5pm on Sunday local time before Commonwealth Day on Monday.
She made no mention of Oprah Winfrey's interview with Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan — the Duke and Duchess of Sussex — which is set to air in the US at midday AEDT, and on Monday in the UK.
"The testing times experienced by so many have led to a deeper appreciation of the mutual support and spiritual sustenance we enjoy by being connected to others," the Queen said in her audio message.
People have become used to "connecting and communicating by our innovative technology" that allows them to "stay in touch with friends, family, colleagues, and counterparts", she said.
In the rare televised address, the Queen walks down St George's Hall flanked by Commonwealth flags at Windsor Castle, where she has been residing during the past few months.
The broadcast replaces the annual service at Westminster Abbey, which was cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.
In the message, which was pre-recorded at Windsor, the Queen also paid tribute to the front-line workers helping in the fight against COVID-19 in Commonwealth nations.
Her message of unity stood in contrast to the turmoil in the royal family before the interview, which promises to provide an unprecedented glimpse into the couple's departure from royal duties and the strains it has put them under.
In Britain, events have conspired to overshadow the tale of a prince and his American bride and some see it as poorly timed.
We've had a look at exactly how the couple is funded and how they could potentially support themselves going forward.

On February 19, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the couple would not return to royal duties and Harry would relinquish his honorary military titles — a decision that made formal, and final, the couple's split from the royal family.
It's unclear what public reaction, if any, the Queen and other royal family members will have to the interview.
The UK's Sunday Times newspaper, citing an anonymous source, reported that the Queen wouldn't watch it.
