Rock leads the way in Joburg Open as champion Schwartzel struggles

England's Robert Rock led the Joburg Open when thunderstorms brought play to an early end Friday while two-time defending champion Charl Schwartzel faced an anxious wait to see if he will make the halfway cut.

Rock carded a four-under-par 67 on Royal Johannesburg and Kensington's West Course to add to his opening 65 over the East layout for an 11-under-par 132 halfway total.

Reigning U.S. Masters champion Schwartzel improved on his first day level-par 72 to shoot a three-under 68 on the East, but is right on the projected cut-line with half the field still to complete their second rounds.

The World No.9 admitted he had been below his best, particularly on the greens.

'It's pretty easy when things are going your way, but on days like this it becomes a mental battle,' he told gathered reporters after his round.

'I felt I hung in well, I didn't get down on myself. It would have been easy to lose my temper, but so early in the year, there's no point. The only way through it is to play, and hopefully I can get into the weekend,' he added.

Two-time U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen is also well-placed on seven-under having completed just six holes of his second round.

Meanwhile on the PGA Tour, Canada's Graham DeLaet took the first-round lead in the $5.5 million Sony Open in Hawaii.

DeLaet carded an eagle-birdie-birdie finish for a seven-under 63 at the the Waialae Country Club.

He had a two-stroke lead over South Korean K.J. Choi, Sweden's Carl Pettersson and Kyle Reifers, who shot 65s.

'I'm just so excited to be back out,' DeLaet, who is returning after being sidelined for nearly a year with back surgery, told AFP.

Steve Stricker, winner of the season-opening Tournament of Champions, shot a 66 to share fifth place.
