Since last Christmas, Netflix’s “The Witcher” and Disney Plus’s “The Mandalorian” have dominated the media with each becoming the biggest TV series in the world in their respective primes.
Both shows had a lot of hype before their respective releases and big financial backings. While The Mandalorian had an advantage for taking place in the highly popular Star Wars Universe, the Witcher had three big marketing advantages: the presence of popular British actor Henry Cavil (Clark Kent/Superman of DCEU Enfranchise & the main antagonist of Mission Impossible: Fallout), the series being based off the popular Polish series of novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, and The Witcher game series that made its content popular around the world.

Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic are two of the most popular review-aggregation websites for film and television.

Both shows received positive feedback from users of Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic around the world. While The Mandalorian has received high praise from both critics and the users, the Witcher has received mostly average feedback from critics but high praise from the audience.
The Mandalorian is rated PG-13 while The Witcher is rated M for Mature. The Witcher contains highly graphic scenes of sex, nudity, and violence while exploring many dark themes. It’s a bold move highly practiced by many Netflix series that does not sit well with some critics. To understand The Witcher, it’s important to at least be familiar with the game series or the novels.
The Entertainment Weekly rated the Witcher 0/100, and then admitted to having no idea about the novels or series and skipping most of the episodes to make sure they can write a review on time. This caused a huge controversy among many fans and critics.

Forbes also slammed the negative reviews writing, “I think it’s a shame to write it off as a Thrones knock-off and I think many of the negative reviews I’ve read seem to misunderstand The Witcher, but that’s how it goes. As a fan of fantasy novels, games, shows, and movies I’m quite accustomed to that sort of thing. It’s the nature of the beast.”
Forbes acknowledged that everyone is entitled to their opinion, but critics really should watch the shows they write about before giving it a score.

IMDb is an online database that contains information on movies, television series, home videos, video games, and streaming online content. It also includes cast, production crew, personal biographies, plot summaries, trivia, ratings, and critical reviews from critics and fans.

It seems that The Mandalorian scores high in the graph above on 0–10 rating scale but The Witcher has around 253,687 votes in comparison to 169,318 votes of The Mandalorian.

What Does the Twitter Say
Most folks tend to tweet about their experience and thoughts on a show or movie they’ve watched, so it is interesting to look at what Twitter says about The Witcher and The Mandalorian. This is where Sentiment Analysis comes into play. Now, we will analyze text and see if the tweets are positive or negative.
Notes: For Sentiments Analysis, R was used in RStudio with various packages including TwitterR which provides access to the Twitter API.
#TheWitcher was used for tweets about The Witcher and #TheMandalorian was used for tweets about The Mandalorian. We analyzed the last 3000 tweets written in English for each of the hashtags.

Both shows are being loved by Twitter users and they are using mostly positive words while talking about the shows. But we can also learn that The Witcher tweets have fewer negative words compared to The Mandalorian.
Word Frequencies
Now, let’s look at word frequencies and try to learn which words are being used the most. To keep the relevance, rather than looking at 3000 tweets, which is a huge amount of tweets, we will look at only the last 200 tweets about the Witcher and the Mandalorian.
Notes: For Word Frequencies, R was used in RStudio with various packages including SnowballC that implements Porter’s word stemming algorithm for collapsing words to a common root to aid comparison of vocabulary

Words like “witcher”, “geraskier” (the dynamic duo name for The Witcher Geralt and his companion The Bard Jaskier), “geralt” and “jaskier” seem to appear the most. It means that folks are interested and talking about the characters Geralt and Jaskier, and their chemistry.
Joey Batey (Jaskier) Reads the Witcher. “Toss A Coin To Your Witcher” sang by Batey becomes a huge hit.

Twitter users are mainly using the words, “themandalorian.” The words that proceed it as most commonly used are “starwars”, “episode”, “babyyoda” and more. Baby Yoda is the cutest character of all. It seems that folks are interested in the characters the Mandalorian and Baby Yoda. They are also making references to the Star Wars enfranchise, talking about each episode, and more.
Final Notes
Both of the shows are amazing. Personally, I enjoyed both shows and am extremely excited for the next seasons of both shows. I think it is important to watch both shows and enjoy it because they are as different in many ways as they are similar.
