2. Why are Vending Machines Popular in Japan?

There are many reasons to answer this, one of which is that the cost of real estate in a large and densely populated city like Japan is quite high. Therefore, vending machines are the best choice to replace convenience stores.

The existence of a vending machine in Japan can also save costs for paying labor. Because, there is no need to hire a cashier, it only takes one person to replace the stock every few days.

Vending machines are also considered to be more practical and comfortable. Where Japanese people are busy with their work, so it can save more time buying drinks from vending machines and not having to walk to the coffee shop.

Lack of Vaccines and Syringes, Corona Vaccination in Japan is Slow

The Corona virus (COVID-19) vaccination program in Japan is running slowly due to a lack of supplies of vaccines and special syringes. This situation adds to the challenge for the Japanese government which targets to vaccinate every adult citizen by the end of this year.
As reported by Reuters on Monday (8/3/2021), since vaccination began three weeks ago, less than 46,500 doses of the Corona vaccine had been injected into health workers on the front lines until Friday (5/3).

At current rates, it would take 126 years to vaccinate Japan's entire population of 126 million. The supply of the Corona vaccine for Japan is expected to increase in the next few months.

In comparison, South Korea (South Korea), which started its vaccination a week later than Japan, has injected nearly seven times the dose of the Corona vaccine until Sunday (7/3) local time.

Unlike most other countries, Japan requires separate clinical trials for new drugs, including vaccines, to be carried out on Japanese patients. This regulation further slows down the vaccine approval process.

So far, only the Corona vaccine developed by Pfizer-BioNTech has been approved by Japanese regulators.

Clinical trials for the Corona vaccines made by AstraZeneca and Moderna are currently underway and are now awaiting regulatory approval.

"The sense of urgency in government circles, in my opinion, is not the same as in other G7 countries," said a doctor and researcher at Keio University, Haruka Sakamoto, stressing that the number of cases and deaths from Corona was relatively low in Japan.

Japan has so far reported a total of 438,000 coronavirus cases, with 8,251 deaths. The number of coronavirus cases in Tokyo, which is still in a state of emergency, has decreased from a daily peak of 2,520 cases on January 7 to 237 cases on March 7.

Sakamoto said the Japanese Ministry of Health's conservative stance was triggered by previous instances when new drugs received approval relatively quickly but the ministry has come under public and media criticism for acting too quickly and endangering safety.

The Japanese Ministry of Health has not yet commented on reports about the speed of Corona vaccination in the country.

Japanese authorities are known to focus on vaccinating 4.8 million health workers at an early stage, before continuing to vaccinate 36 million elderly citizens (seniors). Japan's vaccine minister, Taro Kono, said that although vaccination for citizens aged 65 and over will start next month, the supply of vaccines is very limited.

Unlike in South Korea, which uses a low dead space syringe - which has a special design limiting the dead space between the syringe hub and the needle - to extract six to seven doses of Pfizer vaccine from the bottle instead of five, and extract 12 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine. per bottle instead of 10, Japan failed to prepare a supply of these special syringes.

Kono said that this shortage of special syringes meant that several doses of the vaccine would be wasted once vaccinations for the elderly were started.

Furthermore, Kono stated that Japan continues to negotiate with Pfizer for vaccine supplies and imports are expected to quadruple in April, compared to March with 1.7 million bottles.

Each shipment must be approved by the European Union, which in late January introduced a mechanism to monitor vaccine exports after vaccine manufacturers announced a delay in delivering supplies.

Japan has secured at least 564 million doses of the coronavirus vaccine - the most in Asia, and Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga pledged to provide sufficient vaccine supplies to the entire population by June, before the Tokyo Olympics begin on July 23.
