The number of Covid-19 cases in Thailand has risen sharply

Thailand recorded a record daily increase of 9,635 coronavirus cases on Monday (17/05), most of them in overcrowded prisons.

Of these, 6,853 of them came from prison inmates.

The Thai government acknowledges that there has been an increase in prison clusters, after several activist figures who have been put in prison have tested positive for Covid-19.

Over the past year, the number of coronavirus cases was relatively low, but last month it saw a sharp increase, bringing the total number of cases in Thailand to 111,082.
As of Monday, 25 people died, bringing the total death toll to 614 since the start of the pandemic.

The Asian director of the human rights organization Human Rights Watch recently said that Thai authorities had warned them to be more proactive in dealing with the situation on the ground.

"However, it looks like they were off guard," said Human Rights Watch.
How many prisoners are affected by Covid-19?
According to the Thai government, of the 24,537 prisoners tested, 10,748 of them tested positive for the coronavirus.

In a prison in Chiang Mai Province, in northern Thailand, 61% of prison inmates have the virus.

However, the official at the penitentiary's director general, Dr Veerakit Harnparipan, said "on the ground there is not much that can be done to solve this problem".

"There is already a regulation on the obligation to wear a mask for 24 hours, but in reality it can't be done because [prison inmates] have to take a shower and eat ... they can't eat if they [still have to] wear a mask," said Thailand's deputy director general of prisons, Veerakit, in a press release Monday.
He also said there were matters "which were beyond the authority of the directorate general of prisons".

"[For example] we cannot refuse new prisoners," added Veerakit.
He said the prison directorate general had ordered 12,000 doses of vaccine for prisoners and was trying to buy more vaccines.

In addition, in an effort to suppress the spread of the virus, quarantine for new prisoners has now been extended to 21 days and Covid-19 tests have been increased.

As of last week, most of the Covid-19 cases came from two prisons outside the capital Bangkok. The Justice Ministry said the two prisons were continuing to accept new residents.

According to the AFP news agency, only 10 cases were recorded at Remand prison in Bangkok on April 25. Last week, the figure jumped to 1,960 cases.
What's the situation like in prisons in Thailand?
Human Rights Watch says there are about 380,000 prisoners and prisoners spread across 143 prisons. This agency said "all of them have a risk of being exposed to the Covid-19 outbreak".

The organization urges the authorities to ensure "prisoners and prisoners are provided adequate protection from exposure to the coronavirus" and "quickly release people who are deemed not to be a serious threat to others".

However, the government says the number of prisoners has now decreased to 310,000.

What is the state of the pandemic in Thailand?
The sharp increase in the number of cases came days after the Thai government announced plans to allow restaurants in Bangkok to serve customers, although an official said the number of customers eating in restaurants was only limited to 25% of maximum capacity.

Entertainment centers are still closed and malls must close at 21.00 local time.

So far Thailand has vaccinated 2.2 million health workers and age groups at high risk.

Last year, this country of 70 million people was considered successful in suppressing the pandemic with a low mortality rate.

Thailand has tested tens of thousands of citizens for Covid-19 after an outbreak in the fish market
After months of avoiding an increase in virus cases as has happened in neighboring countries, Thailand has seen a spike in Covid-19 cases so far.

Tens of thousands of citizens have been tested for Covid-19 after hundreds of cases have emerged that are said to have originated in the country's largest fish market.

Apart from conducting mass testing, the authorities have also imposed a lockdown in Samut Sakhon, a coastal province close to the capital Bangkok.

In the province there is a fish market where most of the workforce comes from neighboring Myanmar.
Thailand is the first country after China to record a Covid-19 case. But since then, the number of cases has been relatively small, with more than 4,000 cases and 60 deaths.

This spike in cases certainly worries the public, because so far the residents have followed health guidelines.

"Thais are careful; they wear masks and adhere to health protocols. There may be a small number of people who break the rules, but most are careful," explains BBC Thailand correspondent Issariya Praithongyaem.

How did the surge occur?

This case started with a shrimp seller who was 67 years old. The Thai woman's test results showed positive on Thursday (17/12).
