The United States has pledged to help rebuild Gaza after it was devastated

The United States will help rebuild Gaza as part of efforts to consolidate a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militant groups, the US foreign minister said.

Antony Blinken said this after meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem.

"We know that to prevent recurrence of violence, we must take advantage of the available space to deal with the main problems and challenges. And that starts with addressing the serious humanitarian condition in Gaza and begins rebuilding," Blinken said on Tuesday (25/05).

He said the United States would build international support to achieve this goal and would also make a "big contribution". The amount of aid planned is described later.
However, he said, the US would take steps to prevent existing aid from reaching the Hamas group that controls Gaza.

Blinken also stressed the need to add to the Iron Dome defense system to protect Israel from Hamas rocket attacks.
Blinken's visit to the Middle East, including the West Bank, comes days after a number of mediators attempted to strengthen a ceasefire between Israel and Palestine to prevent more violence in the long term.

A team of Egyptian mediators was in Israel on Saturday (22/05). The United States will not hold direct talks with Hamas, which it considers a terrorist organization.

Both Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas have claimed victory in the latest conflict.

Hamas fired rockets after warning Israel to withdraw from the site, sparking air strikes during the day's retaliation.
Since the ceasefire was put into effect on Friday (21/05), Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the weakening of Hamas' military power through aerial bombardment was a "tremendous success".

He added: "If Hamas thinks we will tolerate the rain of rockets, that is wrong" and promised retaliation with "a new level of strength".

Meanwhile, Hamas has spoken of what it calls "the euphoria of victory" and its leader Ismail Haniyeh said the conflict has "opened the door to a new phase which will see many victories".
'Life will return'
The truce lasted for the entire second day on Saturday. The terms are not clear. Israel only says it has agreed to a "reciprocal and unconditional" cessation of hostilities.

Egypt, Qatar, the US and the United Nations (UN) appear to be involved.

On Saturday, the UN Security Council issued its first statement on the conflict, praising mediators and calling for "complete adherence to the ceasefire".

The Egyptian mediator team has visited Gaza, Israel and the West Bank.
An Egyptian diplomat said the team was implementing agreed measures and trying to prevent practices leading to the latest fighting, but no details were disclosed.

The BBC's Tom Bateman, who is in Gaza, says that while calm is welcomed there, most people believe conflict will happen again.

Civilians on both sides have spoken of the desire to live without fear of aerial attacks.

A shop owner in Gaza, Ashraf Abu Mohammad, told the Associated Press news agency: "Life will return, because this is not the first war, and it will not be the last war."
Keeping calm is the focus

For about 14 years, the Gaza border has been under an Israeli and Egyptian blockade that restricts the travel of people and goods - one of the main issues for future mediation.

Israel says it must limit Hamas access to weapons, because the militants refuse to disarm. The United Nations says the blockade must end in order for Gaza's economy to improve.

On the other hand, Hamas told the BBC that part of the agreed ceasefire involved Israeli compromises on al-Aqsa and the Sheikh Jarrah district, where Jewish settlers displaced Palestinian families.
