There is no guarantee of security, Australia closes its embassy in Afghanistan

Australia will close its embassies in Afghanistan this week. The move was announced by Prime Minister (PM) Scott Morrison. He stressed deep fears about the "increasingly uncertain security environment" in Kabul as foreign troops withdraw.

"The facility will be closed as a temporary measure on May 28, in three days, due to the imminent international military withdrawal from Afghanistan," Morrison said.
The United States (US) has officially begun withdrawing its troops from Afghanistan, opening the latest chapter in America's longest war.
But the move marks an uncertain future for a country still in the tight grip of the Taliban.
Kabul's elected government and Afghanistan's security services remain weak despite foreign capacity building over the past two decades.

Afghanistan's success is far from clear without full US support.
Most of the US troops are expected to leave Afghanistan on September 11, just in time for the 20th anniversary of the al-Qaeda attacks that sparked the US-led invasion of the country.

"It is Australia's hope that this action will be temporary and that we will continue a permanent presence in Kabul as circumstances allow," Morrison said.

A small number of Australian troops also fled Afghanistan, ending a mission that cost Kangaroo Country billions of dollars and left tens of thousands of military personnel deployed far from home.

Without that small contingent and a larger US force in reserve, Morrison said there was an "increasingly uncertain security environment."
"The government has been informed that security measures cannot be put in place to support our ongoing diplomatic presence," he said.

# The President and Prime Minister of Mali are taken hostage in the military barracks
Mali President Bah Ndaw and Prime Minister (PM) Moctar Ouane were held hostage in military barracks by officers annoyed by the reshuffle of government.

United Nations (UN) Secretary General (Secretary General) Antonio Guterres has called for the civilian leaders to be released from their hostages in a military camp outside the capital.

"I am deeply concerned about the news of the detention of Mali's transitional civilian leaders. I call for their calm and unconditional release," Guterres said on Twitter.
President Bah Ndaw and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane chair the interim government which was installed amid threats of regional sanctions following a coup in August.
Monday's detention raised fears of a second coup.
Two senior officials, who declined to be identified, told AFP that soldiers had taken Ndaw and Ouane to the Kati military camp on the outskirts of Bamako.

Their detention follows a sensitive government overhaul on Monday morning designed to respond to growing criticism of the interim government.
The military retained a strategic portfolio it controlled during the previous administration in its reshuffle.

But two coup leaders, former defense minister Sadio Camara and former security minister Colonel Modibo Kone, were replaced.

Coup leaders and military officers had significant influence over the government. They cast doubt on promises to hold elections early next year.

The reshuffle comes amid increasing political challenges in Mali and pressure to comply with the deadline for promised reforms.

# Suu Kyi Appears for the First Time in Court since the Myanmar Military Coup
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar's ousted leader, appeared in person in court on Monday (24/5/2021). This is his first appearance since the government he led in a military coup on February 1.
Her lawyer, Thae Maung Maung, told Reuters that Suu Kyi appeared to be in good health.
According to Thae Maung Maung, the deposed leader held a face-to-face meeting with his legal team for about 30 minutes before the trial.

Suu Kyi, 75, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate for her long struggle to build democracy in the country, is among more than 4,000 people detained since the coup.

He faces a barrage of charges, from illegally importing walkie-talkie radios to violating a state secrets law.

Earlier, the leader of Myanmar's military junta General Min Aung Hlaing said Suu Kyi would appear in court in the next few days.

"Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is in good health. She is at home and healthy. She will be tried in court in a few days," he said via video link with Hong Kong-based Chinese language television station Phoenix Television last week.
