We are broadcasting live from 5pm as Matt Hancock details plans for up to 50 mass vaccination centres across the UK.

The Health Secretary will take the stand from Downing Street as the Government promises regular daily briefings as were held in the first wave of the UK's Covid-19 pandemic.

The first of the new mass vaccination centres have opened to the public this morning in a bid to boost the jab effort.

It comes as hospital mortuaries in Surrey have reported being full to capacity, with 170 bodies currently being housed at a temporary facility in Leatherhead.

Meanwhile ministers met twice yesterday to discuss how enforcement of lockdown rules could be toughened up, as well as potential ways to make the lockdown stricter.

'Hospitals are under significant and sustained pressure'

NHS England medical director Stephen Powis: “Hospitals are under significant and sustained pressure.”

He added: “The vaccine is not a free pass to ignore national guidance.”

'We want to reach every care home resident this month'

Matt Hancock has said that, as of 9am on Monday, there had been a further 46,169 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK.

He also said

On vaccines: “supply is the rate limiting factor”
“The top four priority groups account for 88% of deaths
“We want to reach every care home resident this month.
“We’ve accelerated care home rollout.
“We’re on track to deliver on pledge for top four groups.”

Matt Hancock has appeared

The Health Secretary is talking now.

“As we know, the new variant of the coronavirus is highly contagious, and is putting the NHS under very significant pressure,” he said.

“Yesterday 46,169 cases of coronavirus were recorded across the UK.”

Health Secretary will address nation at 5pm

As England enters its second week of lockdown number three, Health Secretary Matt Hancock is expected to outline the Government’s new vaccination plan to help boost the rollout later today, January 12.

Mr Hancock has hailed the Government’s coronavirus vaccine delivery plan as the “keystone of our exit out of the pandemic.”

Yesterday, January 10, Mr Hancock spoke to Sky News about the potential for police enforcing lockdown in a more stringent fashion, warning that” every flex” of the rules could be fatal.

He went on to say: “The most important thing is that people stay at home and follow the rules that we have got.

“People need to not just follow the letter of the rules but follow the spirit as well and play their part.”

Mr Hancock’s announcement, which is expected to take place at 5pm later on today, comes as England has opened seven new vaccination hubs across the country.

The image, published on the NHS website, illustrates all the hospital hubs, vaccination centres and local vaccination services present in the country.

It comes as a mass vaccination plan was shared today aiming to deliver two million jabs a week by January 31, with 200,000 being administered on a daily basis.

The number of coronavirus infections in the UK could be declining overall, according to a health expert behind the world’s largest ongoing study of COVID-19.

The King’s College London Zoe app found there were 61,813 daily new cases of COVID-19 in the UK on the January 7, down from a peak of around 70,000 at the beginning of January.

Evidence from the app, where users update their symptoms daily and say whether they have been tested in order to paint a clear picture of how COVID is spreading, suggests there were over 839,603 current symptomatic cases of COVID-19 in the UK in the same period.

Researchers behind the study said that the trend is still up in the over 60s which “explains the huge pressure on the hospitals, many 50% full of COVID patients”.

The data is based on the number of newly symptomatic app users per day, and the proportion of these who give positive swab tests.

Graphs released by Zoe, which has 4 million contributors globally, shows the decline just after the beginning of January.

The study suggests that daily new cases of COVID per 100,000 have fallen in the two weeks leading up to January 7 2021.

In England, at the beginning of January, cases were at around 55,000, now down to 50,000, according to the graphs.

Wales showed a decline from around 170 new cases at the beginning of January, now down to around 90 cases, according to the graphs.

Scotland shows a slight increase in cases - there were around 80 new cases at the start of January, which are now at 100.

New cases in northern Ireland have also had a slight increase, up from 80 to around 90 cases per 100,000 people.

British epidemiologist Professor Tim Spector, who co-founded the Zoe app, tweeted: “Good news/bad news story today from the ZOE app- as number of new daily cases falls again back to 62000 - but over 800,000 current symptomatic cases and the trend is still up in the over 60s which explains the huge pressure on the hospitals, many 50% full of COVID patients.”
