What is the Republican end game?

What is the Republican end game?

Since the end of the 2020 election, the President has raised serious doubts about the fairness of the process and, in doing so, gained the support of millions of Americans who voted for the President and agree with his assertions and, ultimately, his legal quest to challenge the results before the December 14 certification by the electoral college.

However, every legal challenge made indirectly by the President’s supporters or by his re-election campaign has all but failed from Pennsylvania, Michigan, Arizona, Georgia, and Nevada. At this time, not a single legal challenge has proved fruitful. The United States Supreme Court has recently rejected another challenge from Pennsylvania by simply writing: “The application for injunctive relief presented to Justice Alito and by him referred to the Court is denied.” This was another major and significant blow to the President and his supporters.

However, and unsurprisingly, the President hasn’t given up just yet. He recently tweeted that his campaign will be intervening in the Texas lawsuit, where Texas is aiming to sue four battleground states in the Supreme Court. In the Texas lawsuit, which 6 other states have joined, the state alleges the election results in the swing states are unlawful. At the time of this writing, attorney generals in Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, South Carolina, Louisiana and Utah have joined Texas in the suit.

Many legal experts, including some on the right, have already doubted that the Supreme Court will hear the case, so the question for Republicans and the President is simply this: What is the end game?

It appears as though the endgame for the President may be to set himself for an announcement in January 2021 that he’s going to run again in four years. After receiving 74 million votes, the President is naturally a frontrunner. If he can maintain and potentially grow his base for the next two years, he’s all but certain to be at the front of whatever nominees develop for the Republican ticket in 2024. Keep in mind, that’s assuming that there are any Republican contenders who would even be willing to challenge him, which may be unlikely if the President can maintain his standing with Republican voters.

It is abundantly clear that President Trump has no plans to remove himself from politics. Frankly, I don’t think Republican voters want him to, regardless of what the GOP establishment desires. As a result, Joe Biden, if confirmed as expected by the electoral college, will have a tumultuous four years ahead where he’ll have an aggressive and forceful former President who received the second most votes in the history of U.S. presidential elections.

President Trump has the opportunity to be a force to be reckoned with and that makes him the second most powerful person in the United States only to Biden himself. Trump will have even greater influence over Republicans than Biden has within his own party, where progressive Democrats aren’t very happy about Biden’s current cabinet picks. Trump’s party advantage over Biden allows him to be the greatest disruptor of Biden and the Democrat’s agenda while simultaneously cementing Trump’s odds of running again in four years.

The GOP establishment must be cautious about crossing Trump and getting on the bad side of the Republican base because the consequences could potentially be dire for vulnerable members who may be replaced by candidates who more outwardly support President Trump and his brand of politics. It puts Republican leadership in a tough spot because while they may want to return some level of normalcy to governance, voters have sent a very different mandate by their sustained support of President Trump. Clearly, Trump’s base seeks a very different style of politics and they aren’t interested in the old guard or elite circles that once governed the body politic.

Republicans should have one end game and one end game only during this tumultuous time in American history. The party must recognize the fundraising potential of this moment and use it to raise money to support Republican candidates up and down the ballot and to heavily invest in increasing the engagement of key minority constituencies that can help maintain Republican majorities across the board.

Anything else that’s not in sync with this objective is a waste of time. While it’s important to support President Trump, this moment has become about something must larger. It’s about an elitist group of people from their ivory towers and their dictates on the average American regardless of their race, sex or creed. The new GOP must become home to all those who feel forgotten or left out by Democrats and their policies.
