What time is Nicola Sturgeon’s Covid update today? When to watch the Scotland lockdown announcement

Nicola Sturgeon will announce any updates to Scotland’s lockdown measures today when she delivers her next update on the nation’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

For the second week in succession people in Glasgow, the only area of Scotland remaining under level three restrictions, are waiting to hear if they can move to level two ahead of the bank holiday weekend.

And with concerns around the Indian variant spreading around the UK and other areas of Scotland rivalling Glasgow’s Covid rate, there will be worries that restrictions could be tightened again – here’s how to watch the announcement live.

When is the Scotland lockdown update? What time Nicola Sturgeon’s Covid announcement is, and latest on Glasgow

What time is Nicola Sturgeon’s Covid update?
Ms Sturgeon will deliver Scotland’s next Covid briefing at 12.15pm on Friday 28 May, which has become a familiar slot for such announcements.

You’ll be able to watch her address live on BBC Scotland, which you can find online along with BBC News on the iPlayer here, while Sky News has its own live YouTube feed here.

Since she was re-elected during this month’s Scottish elections, the First Minister has delivered updates on at least a weekly basis, after stepping back during the purdah period ahead of the vote.

She last appeared on Tuesday, urging people to attend their vaccine appointments after it emerged half of those at a Glasgow mass vaccination hub were missed last weekend.

What can you expect from the announcement?
According to the latest official figures, there were 137.3 new Covid-19 cases per 100,000 people in Glasgow City for the seven-day period up to 21 May.

Unfortunately for residents hoping for an easing of restrictions, this figure rose steadily each day during that period, meaning that it appears unlikely that a move to level two is imminent.

The review could be bad news, too, for Clackmannanshire, which has risen to have the highest rate in Scotland on 139.7, and East Renfrewshire, which remains high on 113.1 cases per 100,000.

It was announced that Glasgow would stay in level three (and the majority of Scotland move down a tier) on Friday 14 May, with last week’s review confirming these rules would remain in place. The city has now been under strict coronavirus measures for 270 days.

Level three means bars and restaurants cannot sell alcohol indoors, while people in the area are also not allowed to visit other people inside their homes.
