Myanmar Heats Up, Military Shoots A Demonstrator To Death

Reporting from the South China Morning Post on Tuesday (3/2/2021), this was conveyed in a military broadcast after facing massive protests in recent weeks since the military coup on February 1.  The protests in Myanmar became deadly after 18 demonstrators died and 30 others were injured on Sunday.

"The Myanmar military has asked the security forces responsible for the deadly attack on anti-coup protesters over the weekend not to use live ammunition as international condemnation grows," was quoted as saying by the SCMP.

As previously reported, police fired tear gas and stun grenades to disperse protesters in Yangon on Monday. Shortly thereafter, they also fired rubber bullets after protests over additional charges against civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi that could keep him locked up in prison for a longer time.

A number of criticisms aimed at Myanmar's military junta have been widely heard from the country's leaders. The United States, Britain and Canada have imposed sanctions on Myanmar's military ranks. Meanwhile, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres urged countries to respond to the violence that occurred in Myanmar. He condemned the violence that occurred in Myanmar. According to him, the use of weapons against protesters is unacceptable. "I urge the international community to send a clear signal to the military that they must respect the wishes of the Myanmar people as expressed through the elections and stop the oppression," he said.

Channel News Asia reported Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said her ASEAN counterpart would encourage dialogue between Suu Kyi and Myanmar's military junta . This will be conveyed at a special meeting of the Asean Foreign Ministers today, Tuesday via video conference . "There is political leadership ... and there is military leadership, on the other. They need to talk, and we need to help bring them together," he said.

Demonstrations against the coup in Myanmar are still ongoing, journalists arrested by the military

A  Myanmar journalist was raided at his home and detained by the military. Myanmar's military has stepped up its use of force after trying to defuse protests demanding an end to the coup.

The police also released tear gas, rubber bullets and live ammunition to disperse the crowd. Journalists are now at risk of being arrested by police and soldiers for trying to perpetuate the atmosphere of the demonstration .

It is known that a number of journalists have been arrested in Myanmar in recent days, including an Associated Press photographer in Yangon.

On the evening of Monday 1 March, a Voice of Burma (DVB) reporter live broadcast the attack on his apartment building in the Myeik city area in which he sought help from his audience. Hours later, on Twitter , DVB said that reporter Kaung Myat Hlaing had been arrested at his residence by security forces.

"DVB does not know where he was taken, and which military authorities took him," DVB said in a statement, as quoted by Channel News Asia , Tuesday (2/3/2021).

He also added that Kaung Myat Naing reported related acts of military violence at the end of last week in Myeik, as well as the demonstration that took place on Monday 1 March.

The sound of loud explosions was often heard during the live broadcast by Kaung Myat Naing.

"If you shoot like this, how am I going to get off?" he shouted at the security forces outside.

DVB, which is a well-known office in Myanmar, started out as a foreign medium during the previous junta period.

The news agency is known to broadcast uncensored reports on TV and radio.

DVB moved to Myanmar the following year, after the previous military dictator relaxed its grip in 2011.

They also demanded that the military release Kaung Myat Naing and other journalists who had been detained since the coup on February 1.

"They all do their professional work as journalists," said DVB.

Myanmar Media Journalist Arrested While Covering Raids

A  journalist for the Myanmar mass media , Kaung Myat Naing, was attacked by the military junta at his residence and then detained on Tuesday (2/3).
Kaung Myat is a journalist for the Burma Democratic Voice of the Republic of Indonesia (DVB).

Kaung Myat's arrest came after he and his team broadcast live a military raid on his apartment building in the southern city of Myeik on Monday evening.

Hours later, DVB Twitter said that Kaung Myat had been taken from his apartment by security forces.

"DVB does not know where he was taken, and which military authorities took him," said the DVB post on Twitter.

DVB added that before being arrested by the military, Kaung Myat had indeed covered the military crackdown over the past weekend in Myeik.

In Kaung Myat's live report there was a loud bang.

"If you shoot like this, how am I going to get off?" shouted Kaung Myat to the security forces in a recording he broadcast live on DVB Facebook.

DVB is the leading news agency in Myanmar. DVB was once regarded as a mass media of dissent by the previous military junta administration because it often broadcast uncensored reports on television and radio.

In a statement on Twitter, DVB urged the Myanmar military to release Kaung Myat and a number of other journalists who had been detained since the February 1 coup.

"They all do professional work as journalists," the DVB statement continued.

Apart from Kaung Myat, the Myanmar military has continued to target activists and journalists covering the bloody demonstrations over the weekend in which at least 18 people died as a result of clashes between demonstrators and security forces.

One of the photographers at the Associated Press news agency in Yangon was also reported to have been secured by the Myanmar military.

The Japanese freelance journalist was also arrested by the security forces for several hours and finally released.
