FLORENCE, Italy — Swiss motorcycle rider Jason Dupasquier has died following a crash during Moto3 qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix, the Careggi Hospital in Florence announced Sunday. He was 19.

“Despite the best efforts of circuit medical staff and all those subsequently attending to the Swiss rider, the hospital has announced that Dupasquier has sadly succumbed to his injuries,” MotoGP said in a statement.

Dupasquier was involved in an accident with Ayumu Sasaki and Jeremy Alcoba toward the end of Saturday’s session, which was immediately red-flagged.

Dupasquier appeared to fall and was then hit by his own motorbike and that of Sasaki, while a visibly shocked Alcoba later said on television that he thought he had also gone over the Swiss rider’s legs.

He was treated on the track for approximately 30 minutes before a helicopter landed and airlifted him to a hospital in Florence.

The Moto3 rider Jason Dupasquier has died as a result of injuries sustained in an accident during qualifying on Saturday, MotoGP has announced. The 19-year-old Swiss was hit by another bike after falling from his own at Mugello in Italy.

“Following a serious incident in the Moto3 qualifying two session at the Gran Premio d’Italia, it is with great sadness that we report the passing of Moto3 rider Jason Dupasquier,” MotoGP said on its official website.

“Dupasquier was involved in a multi-rider incident between turns nine and 10, with the session red flagged thereafter,” the statement added. “FIM medical intervention vehicles arrived at the site immediately and the Swiss rider was attended to on the track before being transferred by medical helicopter, in a stable state, to Careggi Hospital in Florence.”

“Despite the best efforts of circuit medical staff and all those subsequently attending to the Swiss rider, the hospital has announced that Dupasquier has sadly succumbed to his injuries.”

It was reported Dupasquier was being treated by medics on the circuit for over half an hour after the incident before being flown to hospital. His team, Prustel GP, announced they would not be taking part in Sunday’s race. Dupasquier was in his second season in MotoGP’s lightweight class.

The MotoGP grid staged a one-minute silence ahead of Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix, which was won by the world championship leader, Fabio Quartararo. Following his win, the French rider stopped at the scene of Dupasquier’s accident before pointing to the sky.

“It was tough because when you do the one-minute silence, the emotion is coming really quick and it is difficult to stay focused,” said Quartararo, who also held a Swiss flag on the podium alongside the second- and third- placed Miguel Oliveira and Joan Mir. “We got the win and that one was for Jason and his family.”

The three-times MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo earlier paid tribute to Dupasquier on Twitter. “My deepest condolences to Jason Dupasquier’s family, friends and team. Ride in peace Jason,” Lorenzo wrote.

Several Formula One drivers also posted tributes. “Motorsport can be so cruel,” wrote the Williams driver George Russell. “Thinking of the family and friends of Jason Dupasquier and everyone in the MotoGP paddock. Ride in peace, Jason.”

This was Dupasquier’s second season in the Moto3 series after beginning his racing career in 2011. Son of MotoCross rider Phillipe Dupasquier, he was destined for speed, and that was immediately proved when he won several SuperMoto Swiss championships and debuted at the Red Bull Rookies Cup in 2019, at which point he was awarded a two-year contract in Moto3. While his 2020 season wasn’t ideal, Dupasquier was sitting in the top 10 in points at the time of his death.

Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
