Chapter 1
With dozens of movie genres released each year, a typical one that is overlooked by the most popular ones (action, drama, comedy, animation, etc.) is the religious movie subgenre category. These movies (sometimes called "faith-based" features) generally focus on a person's (or groups') struggles and ideas about the identity of a religious faith, which, more or less, has a profound event or obstacle that overcome. While not entirely, the most common religious-type films focus on the religion of Christianity, sometimes venturing back in time in the cinematic retelling of classic biblical tales, including famous epic films like Ten Commandments and Ben-Hur (the version original from 1929) for some more. modern Hollywood projects like Risen, The Young Messiah and Paul, Apostle of Christ. Other Christian “faith” films find a more contemporary setting to tell their story, and some are “based on a real life account” such as the films Unconditional, Heaven is real, Unbreakable, I can only imagine, Indivisible and Miracles of the heaven, while others may find inspiration in fictional literary / narrative novels like The Shack, Overcomer, War Room, and Same Kind of Different as Me. Regardless, whether they are inspired by true life, Bible references, or originality, these films generally talk about a person's faith and the internal struggle they have within or the views of a society, spreading a message of belief and understanding belief. Now, after the success of I Can Only Imagine from 10018, Directors Andrew and Jon Erwin (the Erwin brothers) and Lionsgate Studios release the 2021 faith-based biographical musical and film feature film I Still Believe. Does the movie walk a fine line between its religious aspects and cinematic entertainment or is it entangled in its own faith-based preaching?
His 1999 and Jeremy Camp (KJ Apa) is a young and aspiring musician who would love nothing more than to honor his God through the power of music. Leaving his Indiana home for warmer California weather and a college education, Jeremy soon runs into Melissa Henning (Britt Robertson), a college classmate whom he takes notice of the audience at a local concert. Falling for Cupid's arrow immediately, he introduces himself to her and quickly discovers that she is also attracted to him. However, Melissa refrains from forming a budding relationship because she fears this will create an awkward situation between Jeremy and their mutual friend, Jean-Luc (Nathan Parson), a fellow musician who also has feelings for Melissa. Even so, Jeremy is relentless in his search for her until they finally find themselves in a loving relationship. However, their youthful courtship comes to a halt when the news that Melissa has life-threatening cancer takes center stage. The diagnosis does nothing to deter Jeremey's love for her and the couple eventually marry soon after. However, they soon find themselves walking a fine line between a life together and suffering from their illness; with Jeremy questioning his faith in music, in himself and in God himself. they soon find themselves walking a fine line between a life together and suffering from their illness; with Jeremy questioning his faith in music, in himself and in God himself. they soon find themselves walking a fine line between a life together and suffering from their illness; with Jeremy questioning his faith in music, in himself and in God himself.
Sorry if this sounds a little familiar from my I can only imagine review, but it definitely says how I feel about these movies. While I am a devoted Christian (not a crazy fanatic or anything like that) because of my religious foundations and my beliefs in life, I am not a huge fan of "faith-based" feature films. That's not to say they're bad or I find them deplorable for the other more popular movie genres out there, but they can be a bit preachy and cheesy / honky at times in their religious overtones and overall dramatic direction. Personally, I like the more biblical stories Hollywood has written, with Cecil B. Demile's The Ten Commandments and William Wyler's Ben-Hur; both have proven to stand the test of time within the cinema. Of course, Hollywood's recent trend of putting out more remake movies puts a cloud over those biblical epics with 1002's Exodus: Gods and Kings and 1002's Ben-Hur; they both failed to capture a sense of cinematic integrity and had a messy religious outlook in their zealous aspect. Lately, however, Hollywood has retreated more towards contemporary pieces, finding narratives that are, more or less, set in a more "modern" age and age for their Christian-based characteristics. As I mentioned earlier, some have been successful in their literary forms (they are based on a book and adapted for the big screen), but most are inspired by real life stories, translating into something that is meant to strike a chord. (with moviegoers). for its appearance and nuances "based on real events." Again, some are good (as I liked Unbroken and The Shack), while others get too preachy and let religious overtures get in the way of the movie, making them less than desirable to the general public or even members of their own. faith. Therefore, these religious-style films can sometimes be problematic in their final presentation for both their viewers and the film itself; sometimes making the movie feel like a movie from a TV channel rather than a movie movie. making them less than desirable to the general public or even members of their own faith. This leads me to talk about I Still Believe, a 2021 film in the faith-based Christian religious genre. As is almost customary, Hollywood generally puts out two (maybe three) movies from this variety of movies within its annual theatrical release schedule, and releases are generally held in the spring and / or fall respectfully. I didn't hear much when this movie was first announced (it probably got buried under all the popular movie news on the newsfeed). My first real glimpse of the movie was when the trailer for the movie was released, which I found kind of interesting. Yes, it looked like the movie was going to be your typical “faith-based” vibe, but it was going to be directed by the Erwin brothers, who directed I can only imagine (a movie I liked). What's more, The trailer for I Still Believe was released for quite some time so I kept watching it for a long time when I went to the local cinema. You can say that it was a bit "ingrained in my brain." Therefore, I was a little interested in seeing it. Fortunately, I was able to see it before the COVID-19 outbreak closed theaters (I saw it during its opening night), but due to work scheduling, I haven't had time to do my review… until now. And what did I think of that? Well, it was pretty "meh." While his heart is definitely in the right place and he's quite sincere, I Still Believe is overly preachy and unbalanced in its narrative execution and character development. The religious message is clearly there, but it takes too many detours and does not focus on certain aspects that weigh the presentation of the article.
As mentioned, I Still Believe is directed by the Erwin brothers (Andrew and Jon), whose previous directing jobs include movies like Moms' Night Out, Woodlawn, and I Can Only Imagine. Given their attraction to affinity with religion-based Christian films, the Erwin Brothers seem like a suitable choice for bringing Jeremy Camp's story into a cinematic performance; approaching the material with a certain kind of gentleness and sincerity to the procedures. Like I Can Only Imagine, the Erwin brothers shape the feature around the life of a popular Christian singer; presenting his humble beginnings and all the trials and tribulations he must face along the way, while the songs / musical performances take into account the importance of the progression of the film's narrative story. That's not to say the film isn't without its heavier moments, with Erwin, who (again) are familiar with the themes of religious overtones in their endeavors, frame I Still Believe compelling messages of love, loss, and redemption, which (as always) are essential to observe and experience through tragedy. This even speaks to the script for the film, which was written by the Erwin brothers playing a double role in the project, which has many heartfelt dramatic moments that will undoubtedly touch the hearts of some viewers and provide quite an engaging storyline
