A brief look at Honda’s BS-VI product line-up

Honda has been present in the Indian market for a couple of decades now, and it has established a trust for being one of the most reliable brands out there. After all, there are still many Honda customers who’ve kept their City – and also regularly maintained it – for almost two decades without any ownership hassles.

The City is, of course, the product that made Honda what it is in the Indian market today. That is why Honda now sells two generations of the City, so as to ensure more and more consumers pick it today over any other mid-size sedan.

Here’s a quick overview of all the Honda cars on sale in the BS-VI era, as of late-2020.

1. Honda City 4th Gen

So, as discussed above, Honda cars still sells the older fourth-generation model of the City, which made its debut in 2014 and received a facelift update in 2017. Where the 2014 model felt bare bones to some extent, the 2017 model solved all the said issues. In fact, it still looks quite modern and striking, which is why some might even pick it over the 5th gen model. After all, it is also priced lower and comes as decently equipped, with the new top-spec V trim packing in some essential goodies such as push-button start, electronically-retractable and adjustable wing mirrors, 15-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple Carplay/ Android Auto support, and so on.

2. Honda City 5th Gen

The all-new City has just made it into the Indian market, and it is now the longest and widest car in the segment. The City is an all-rounder which shall appeal to every prospective buyer since it’s high on space, comfort, goodies, and road presence. It is also the most engaging car to drive in the segment with a naturally-aspirated engine. And while the 4th gen model continues with just the older 1.5-litre petrol engine, the 5th gen model gets a new 1.5-litre NA engine with Double Overhead Camshafts (DOHC and Variable Valve Timing Control (VTC), in addition to the ubiquitous VTEC system. It is also available with a 1.5-litre diesel engine, which has been discontinued from the older model.

3. Honda Jazz

The Jazz, too, has recently made its jump from BS-IV to BS-VI emission standards. In the process, Honda has given the Jazz a very mild makeover, but it doesn’t seem to take away the fact that it’s now an old car and needs a generational upgrade. The 2020 Jazz has also made its transition to petrol-only power, as it’s now available with a sole 1.2-litre NA engine. It, however, is the only car in the segment to feature an electric sunroof, which might draw some buyers.

4. Honda Amaze

The Honda Amaze was recently launched in 2018, as the second-generation model of the sub-4m compact sedan. Honda has also recently launched a special limited-edition model to bring in more customers to the Amaze nameplate. It comes powered by the same engines as it did in the pre-BS6 era.

5. Honda WR-V

Like the Jazz, the WR-V, too, received a minor facelift this year. However, it is available with both a 1.2-litre NA petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel engine, albeit only with manual transmissions. To give credit where it’s due, Honda has designed the WR-V to be a very spacious crossover, despite it being measuring under 4m in length. However, its crossover appeal seems to have not pleased the SUV buyers.

6. Honda Civic

The Civic, after being on a hiatus for six years, made its comeback last year. However, since most people buy SUVs these days over executive sedans, it has not reached as many sales numbers as Honda had anticipated. Nonetheless, it’s radical, dynamically great, and comes with a set of peppy engines.

7. Honda CR-V

It is, of course, the flagship model from the Japanese manufacturer in the Indian market. While it may not be the biggest SUV in its segment, the CR-V impresses on many fronts, one of them being that it is very easy to drive since it’s based on a monocoque chassis. As of late-2020, the CR-V is available with just a 2.0-litre petrol engine, but a diesel engine is expected to power the CR-V soon enough.
