Nudging womankind, breast cancer incidence and mortality in India.

2020 is the year of uncertainties, and people have come together to fight against the odds and lead an everyday life amidst challenges. Likewise, there are other health concerns about women that they need to tackle. One such serious issue is breast cancer, and October 2020, being breast cancer awareness month, everyone needs to understand the implications behind the same. We all have the responsibility of reminding women about the causes, symptoms, and the path to recovery regarding cancer.

How common is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancer types for women globally, both in developed and developing countries. In low-and middle-income countries, the cases have gradually risen in recent years due to increased life expectancy, increased urbanization, and the adoption of modern lifestyles.

Causes of breast cancer:

There is little information on the causes of breast cancer, so early detection of the disease remains the cornerstone of breast cancer prevention. A majority of the best cancer specialists in India maintain that if they can diagnose cancer at the early stages and appropriate detection and care are available, there is a fair possibility that they can cure the disease.

Detecting the early signs of breast cancer:

Mammograms are considered one of the best ways to detect breast cancer early before it gets worse enough to feel or trigger symptoms, and also, it can be easier to treat. There are various signs of breast cancer, and some individuals have no signs whatsoever. If a woman has any of these symptoms of concern, she should consult her doctor right away. Symptoms can include:

  • A considerable and visible change in breast size or shape

  • Sharp and numb pain in any/every portion of the breast

  • Nipple discharging liquid (including blood) other than milk

  • A fresh lump in the breast/ underarm

  • Irritation/dimpling of breast skin

  • Redness/flaky skin in the nipple area of the breast

Lowering the risk of breast cancer:

  • Maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle

  • Exercising regularly

  • Restricting alcoholic beverages

  • Consulting doctor about contraceptive pills/hormone replacement

  • Breastfeeding infants, if possible

  • Speaking to the doctor to reduce risks if there is a family history of breast cancer

Breast cancer treatment to fight mortality rate:

There are many best cancer specialists in India who continuously work towards reducing the mortality rate in the final stages of cancer. Depending on the stage, doctors can suggest surgery, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, biological therapy, radiation therapy, etc. Usually, if a woman has early-stage breast cancer, she can be treated with chemotherapy for three to six months, but the doctor would be adjusting the timing as per circumstances. If it is an advanced breast cancer stage, treatment can extend beyond six months.

Conclusion:

Men and women should come together to combat the disease and promote breast cancer awareness across the nation to save women from the impacts of cancer in the early stages itself.
