Many that retired in their 30s or 40s expect their retirement savings to last forever by withdrawing 4% every year. This is simply wrong. Bill Bengen’s rule was set up for portfolio longevity of 30 years. A person that has retired in their 30s or 40s would live for another 50 or 60 years. History tells us that a portfolio made of 75% in stocks and 25% in bonds has a 15% chance of being exhausted after a period of 50–60 years of 4% withdrawal rate. This probability increases to 30–35% if a portfolio is made of 50%/50% in stocks/bonds. At 5% withdrawal rate, the same portfolio would have 60–65% probability of being exhausted in a period of 50–60 years. To be on the safe side and for high portfolio longevities or for those who are targeting to leave their wealth to their children, we would recommend withdrawal rates of 3.0–3.25%.

When business was booming, Andrew Mason looked like the ‘one of us’ type of guy at the helm of the world’s fastest growing company. Once the negative press hit, he seemed like the child behind the wheel of a racecar. Except now people started doubting whether it was indeed a racecar — or just a photoshopped toy model.

For customers, it was something new. Few to none local businesses offered coupons or discounts of any sort. Groupon was the only place where you could get movie tickets for less. Plus, there was a social element to it — you might want to invite your coworkers to reach the critical mass of buyers required to validate the daily deal.

Japanese people stay lean despite eating lots of white rice because they’re unafraid of it. They have a relationship with it where it neither scares nor intimidates them — instead of avoiding it, they enjoy it in moderate portions, with different vegetables, filling fats, and nourishing proteins. They know that if they adhere to principles of moderation and mindfulness, they’re going to be fine.

Foods should not be feared, and should never be a source of our anxiety. We should not be afraid of white rice like we should be afraid of poison, for this will only perpetuate cycles of obsession, shame and stress-eating, and will further damage our well-being. This applies not just to rice, but to all foods.

Andrew’s goofiness didn’t help. He was the type of guy to post a video of him dancing next to a Christmas tree in his underwear. He was the type of guy to tell reporters he lived with 20 cats, just to fool around. And he remained that guy through all the millions he earned from Groupon’s funding.

The doubt took hold, and, despite Andrew’s hilarious attempt to look serious, Groupon’s stock went down by 80% over the next twelve months. Andrew was fired from his own company a year later.

Practice telling stories to your friends and family (you certainly do this already), but pay attention to how they react. What draws them in? What makes them laugh? What surprises them?

In Zen and the Art of Writing, Ray Bradbury recommends writing one story per week. As he says, “nobody can write 52 bad stories.” If you write enough of them, you will eventually write a good one. And you’ll learn a lot along the way.

Groupon’s rapid-growth genius was two-fold. For one, it enabled small, local businesses take advantage of e-commerce, risk free. It was the year 2008, and cash-deprived mom-and-pop stores were happy to wait on Groupon’s waitlist for that often vital surge of customers that would come after their witty daily deal promotion.

One of the best ways to practice writing is to write stories. Even if you primarily write nonfiction or poetry, you should try your hand at short stories. No matter what you’re writing, your job is to tell a story.

It’s no coincidence that here on Medium, what we write and submit aren’t “articles” they’re “stories.” We’re all storytellers, whether we realize it or not. Once you’re aware of that, you can more consciously write with a story in mind.

At the same time, Groupon’s merchants started publicly addressing their dissatisfaction with the service. Groupon only advertised one daily deal for a local business, and, with a massive customer base, many of these businesses were overrun as a result of the promotion. It sounds like a good problem to have, but once you have dozens of unsatisfied customers leaving negative reviews online, you’d rather not have a promotion at all.
