Congressman Matt Gaetz, a Republican from Florida, took to the House floor on Wednesday night to spread an increasingly popular conspiracy theory that the pro-Trump mobs that overtook the Capitol building were in fact aligned with antifa.
The claim was based on an anonymous source in a story from the Washington Times, a conservative outlet that has repeatedly pushed conspiracy theories. The source was described as a retired military official who told the newspaper that a facial recognition company called XRVision matched Capitol building rioters to previous images of antifa protesters collected in Philadelphia. The day after OneZero published this story, XRVision provided a statement to BuzzFeed News disavowing any connection to the Washington Times story. The company did, however, acknowledge that it privately circulated an image analysis.

“The image analysis that we performed were distributed to a handful of individuals for their private consumption and not for publication. XRVision takes pride in its technology’s precision and deems the Washington Times publication as outright false, misleading, and defamatory,” the company said in the statement to BuzzFeed News.
XRVision’s claims are implausible and nearly impossible to verify, as the company does not seem to have any relationship to the facial recognition industry or academia. Unlike many other companies operating in the space, it has not published research publicly, it has not seemed to appear at recent academic conferences, it does not appear to have public federal government contracts, and it does not list any information about clients or its technology online.
The only evidence of the company’s alleged facial recognition system is an image posted to CTO Yaacov Apelbaum’s personal website, which claims that the company can collect images for facial recognition from social media, CCTV cameras, and body cameras.

Yet XRVision has not submitted its facial recognition algorithms to be tested by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, a testing procedure that many biometrics firms, regardless of size, use to legitimize their technology.
As such, there is no reason to believe any claims that the company has made are true. XRVision did not immediately respond to a request for comment from OneZero.
The company appears to have two LinkedIn accounts. One account, called XRVision, only lists three employees and has consistently posted conspiracy theories about Hunter Biden over the last year. These posts link to Apelbaum’s personal blog, home to numerous other conspiracy theories. The other LinkedIn account, called XRVision.ai, lists seven employees and has made no public posts.
XRVision is based in Singapore and has raised four rounds of funding, according to Crunchbase, though many of the details surrounding that funding are unclear.
One LinkedIn post from the XRVision account claims to have used facial recognition to compare two photos involved in a Hunter Biden conspiracy theory from earlier this year in an attempt to assert that Hunter Biden was photographed with a crack pipe.

Facial recognition can be highly flawed, depending on who builds the software. For example, even the U.S. federal government has concluded that facial recognition built by any manufacturer is less effective on people of color across the board. And facial recognition programs rely on a database or multiple databases for images to be matched against. There is no evidence to support that XRVision has any comprehensive database of images of protesters, antifa or otherwise.
