Suicide Squad Star Shares Funny Poster For Amanda Waller’s Second-in-Command

The Suicide Squad star - Steve Agee, posted a tongue-in-cheek image on Twitter featuring his character, John Economos, a government agent working for Amanda Waller. The upcoming DC film, directed by James Gunn, is a standalone sequel to David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, which premiered in 2016. The story follows the titular group of super criminals as they execute life-threatening missions under the watchful eye of government director, Amanda Waller. In The Suicide Squad, slated for a summer release, the imprisoned convicts must travel to Corto Maltese to demolish a prison and laboratory of dubious origin.

The original Suicide Squad garnered a record-breaking opening weekend in August of 2016, effectively transforming into an early commercial success for Warner Bros. However, despite its box office clout, the film received overwhelmingly negative reviews. While critics appreciated the talent and humor of the cast, particularly Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, they disparaged the weak plot, uneven editing, and muddled storytelling. Eventually, Ayer acknowledged the criticism and admitted that he wished he had finessed certain elements of the broader plot. Although that movie was poorly-received by many viewers, Warner Bros. greenlit the production of The Suicide Squad. Initially helmed to direct the sequel, Ayer left to focus on Gotham City Sirens, which ultimately led to Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn, taking over the project.

On Twitter, The Suicide Squad's Steve Agee shared a photoshopped movie poster of his character, John Economos, in front of a backdrop of cartoon pizzas. In the film, Economos works as a disillusioned aide to Viola Davis’s Amanda Waller. Agee’s humorous image plays into this characterization, showcasing a tired, sullen expression in front of the bright white letters of the film’s title. Check it out below:

While planning the cinematic layout of the movie, Gunn relied on war films and Suicide Squad comics from the 1980s for visual inspiration. Noting that the sequel functions as a separate narrative from the first Suicide Squad, Gunn simultaneously assured fans that the new story will not contradict the initial premise introduced in Ayer’s film. Recurring cast members, including Robbie’s iconic Harley Quinn, will reportedly help uphold much of the humor that was appreciated in its filmic predecessor.

Considering the wide-ranging slate of films set for future release, including The Suicide Squad, it appears that the DCEU is committed to launching a significant mark on the world of comic book superheroes and supervillains. At the same time, the DCEU has struggled historically with maintaining a continuity, often offering up releases, such as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the recent Wonder Woman 1984, that tripped upon their initial debuts. Even in the face of these narrative letdowns, fans remain optimistic for a turnaround. Hopefully, the DCEU leans into a defined pop culture space, embracing the strengths of its broad range of characters, rather than getting in its own way.
