Taiwan’s Tech Arena Takes Center Stage at the All-Digital CES 2021

Over the past 50 years, CES has served as the global stage for consumer technology innovation. This year, for the first time ever, an all-digital CES 2021 will attempt to continue to function as the preeminent venue for introducing new products and to engage with global brands that represent the future of the tech industry. An all-digital CES 2021 will enable the members of the global tech community with the ability to safely share ideas and introduce the products that will improve our quality of life, work and play this coming year.

While we all look forward to the return of the traditional in-person event, this year’s all-digital format brings with it some very distinct advantages. Many organizations, most notably small, grassroots startups, do not have the resources or the wherewithal to have a presence at an in-person event such as CES. This year, any company with a compelling story to tell can now get involved in the show right from their home city. This provides them with the critically important access necessary to reach the broad international audience that comprises the global tech community.

An excellent example of how this concept has been executed upon is the Taiwan Tech Arena (TTA). The all-digital version of this year’s Taiwan Tech Arena will serve as a virtual collaborative hub for startups from different industries and countries to share their experiences, find new opportunities, and collaborate to explore breakthrough technologies. In past years many startups were unable to have a physical presence in Las Vegas at the TTA. Today, however, thanks to Taiwan’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST), over 100 startups will be able to showcase their wares to the world courtesy of the new Taiwan Tech Arena (TTA) Virtual Edition.

MoST: A 60 Year Legacy of an Unyielding Commitment to Technology

Taiwan Tech Arena (TTA) is organized and supported by Taiwan’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST). Simply put, it is Taiwan’s tech startup ecosystem building program. TTA has been partnering with innovative technology affiliates and renowned accelerators around the world to organize and execute startup accelerators or supportive programs. Its vision is threefold:

The predecessor to the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), the National Science Council (NSC) of the Executive Yuan, traces its history as far back as February 1959. As the government’s dedicated scientific and technological development agency, the NSC was charged with three main missions:

• Promoting the nation’s overall S&T development
• Supporting academic research
• Developing the science parks

NSC was reorganized and became MoST in March of 2014. With the MoST transition came a new organizational structure whose goal is to facilitate stronger links between academic research and industrial development. To this day MOST has maintained NSC’s tradition of innovative and entrepreneurial spirit by encouraging creativity in science and technology in order to boost Taiwan’s academic and industrial competitiveness at the international level.

Five Key Areas of Lifestyle Disciplines Powered by Tech Featured at TTA for 2021

For this year’s CES all-digital show, MoST is bringing the innovations of over 100 startups to the world under the new TTA Virtual Edition. It will be the fourth time MoST is hosting the TTA at CES. At TTA, selected companies will showcase their technologies in fields such as AI, 5G wireless communications, healthcare, and smart energy. The TTA pavilion will enable visitors to experience demonstrations of the latest technology, attend talks and keynotes, interact with representatives from the startups and the ministry, and hold virtual meetings to explore business opportunities.

MoST recognizes the need to cross-pollinate different technologies’ existing strengths with new ideas to create new products and services. The disruption brought about by the global pandemic has demonstrated the power of international collaboration across different industries through the strategic deployment of new technologies. To further foster global cooperation and collaboration, the TTA Pavilion at CES 2021 is supporting the following lifestyle disciplines by defining how new technologies and innovation are driving advances in these areas. Some examples:

• Healthcare & Wellness — Medical electronics, mobile health management, imaging tech for rapid disease screening
• Smart Living — Smart disinfectant devices, confidential edge computing nodes
• Cyber Security / Cloud Solutions — Vehicle-to-everything communications, security platforms for user ID multi-factor login
• Mobility Tech — Automatic indoor mapping, connected vehicle and asset data monitoring
• Tech for Good / Betterment of Humanity — Cloud-based crypto trading platforms, micro-LED for ultra-screen display

The Vaccination Credential Initiative — a coalition of that includes Microsoft, Oracle, Cigna, Salesforce and the Mayo Clinic — wants to establish standards to verify whether someone has received the vaccine in order to prevent people from falsely claiming that they have. The idea is that governments and a wide range of businesses, including airlines, will require proof that people have received the shot.

According to the VCI, the current vaccination record system does not readily support convenient access, control and sharing of verifiable vaccination records. The coalition wants to empower individuals to obtain an encrypted digital copy of their immunization credentials to store in a digital wallet of their choice. Those without smartphones could receive paper printed with QR codes containing W3C verifiable credentials.

By working with health IT companies, such as Epic and Cerner in the US, the new system will be able to draw from electronic medical records to create the digital certificate.

The coalition is basing its effort on work already done by one its members, The Commons Project Foundation, a Swiss nonprofit that developed the CommonPass, an internationally accepted digital certificate to prove that travelers have tested negative for Covid-19. The certificate is currently in use by all three major airline alliances.

“The goal of the Vaccination Credential Initiative is to empower individuals with digital access to their vaccination records so they can use tools like CommonPass to safely return to travel, work, school and life, while protecting their data privacy,” said Paul Meyer, CEO of The Commons Project Foundation. “Open standards and interoperability are at the heart of VCI’s efforts and we look forward to supporting the World Health Organization and other global stakeholders in implementing and scaling open global standards for health data interoperability.”
