Trumps Ex-Attorney Michael Cohen Has a Few Hypotheses

Trump’s former fixer and personal attorney is sounding the alarm again. Michael Cohen, in a Zoom chat this past weekend, echoed what many pundits and politicians are saying about the end of 45’s presidency: more violence is on the way, stoked by Trump’s ego.

Speaking with German and U.S. journalists during a session hosted by the Cohen said that Americans should brace for more acts of protest in the days leading up to the inauguration of President-elect Joseph Biden. This possibility impacts not only politicians, but also anti-racism advocates and equity workers regardless of race. Cohen — who pleaded guilty in 2018 to including campaign finance violations after a special investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election — said that Trump sees himself “as a monarch, as a dictator, as an autocrat” and will not accept his loss to Biden.

Experts have long been saying that this way of thinking led to a group of White men brandishing Confederate flags and spears as they broke into the Capitol building last week.

“He has a very fragile ego,” Cohen said. “…he truly believes he won this election and that it was stolen from him.”

Cohen characterized Trump — whom he at one point called “the idiot-in-chief — as “enjoying” the chaos, and predicted that the president will continue to rile up his base in the days leading up to Inauguration Day on January 20. “He’s going to continue to blow this dog whistle, right, to gaslight these supporters each and every day… claiming the election was stolen, claiming that he is the rightful president,” he said.

True to what has previously been seen about the attempted coup, Cohen said Trump “talks in code” and will not outright encourage his supporters to come to the inauguration. Instead, Cohen believes his former client will condemn the inauguration as a “sham.”

“I do suspect there will be protest upon protest by the same groups that stormed the Capitol, and I do believe it is going to be dangerous,” he said.

The insurrection followed weeks of Trump using Twitter to sow seeds of discord and dispense rhetoric that the election was rigged. He’s since been and removed from other social media networks. To that end, many anti-racist activists have said it is almost too little too late.

Cohen — who was sentenced to three years in prison — was one of Trump’s closest advisors, having worked in the Trump Organization before becoming part of his campaign team. So when Cohen’s former boss announced on Friday that he will  take the oath of office, Cohen knew exactly what backstory was at play. Trump “doesn’t have the fortitude to sit and watch someone else be inaugurated because it will mean he is the loser,” said Cohen.

Trump’s announcement came two days after his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol waving Confederate flags, forcing lawmakers to run for cover. At least in connection with the melee, including a Capitol police officer.

Trump may eventually acknowledge Biden will be the president, but also will insist that the election was stolen and that American democracy is over, Cohen said.

Even “worse,” he added, is that Trump is getting support from sycophants like Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows — and that his own “idiotic” children will continue “spewing the same stupidity that Donald Trump is doing.”

“And it’s a disgrace, not just to our country, but to democracy which we try to instill in other countries,” Cohen said. “How could you tell another country about how great democracy is when you have the president of the United States acting in such an undemocratic way?”

It’s also worth noting that in 2016, Cohen co-founded with Cleveland pastor Darrell C. Scott the  to show that candidate Trump had broad appeal across racial and ethnic groups.

“My hope with the National Diversity Coalition was that… Donald Trump would be more representative and be a leader for all of the various different groups — race, religions, creeds, colors… sexual orientations — that he would rise to the level of the office of the president,” Cohen said. “We all thought he would rise to be a better man than what he actually was at the Trump Org. But he didn’t do that.”

Cohen has been on home confinement since last July when he was released from prison due to Covid-19 concerns. Last month he filed papers arguing that he should be eligible for early release thanks to good behavior and hundreds of hours of work and prison courses. The case is ongoing. (House arrest doesn’t seem to be affecting his ability to find a platform: Last fall Cohen released Disloyal: A Memoir and launched the podcast Mea Culpa with Michael Cohen. )

As Trump winds down his last days in office, Cohen anticipated the president executing a series of pardons, which many  might test the bounds of democracy: “I would not be shocked to see him pardon his family, pardon (Jared) Kushner, or try to pardon himself.”
