Hsieh twice built companies from the ground up and found big exits: Zappos to Amazon for $1.2 billion, and before that, LinkExchange, which Microsoft acquired for $265 million before Hsieh turned 25.

,

Not just the quirkiness for which he was known — a near-billionaire who lived in an Airstream trailer because, as he once explained, he valued experiences over things — but instead, for the 2-word policy Zappos had for new employees.

,

Our sociality means: I feel happy when you have dignity, worth, purpose, meaning. That is the truth in me, in all of us. I receive the gift of happiness from giving enough sociality to form a relationship with you. That innate tendency in us, that instinct, must now extend to the whole world, all of life. The rest human race, trees, forests, rivers, lions, fish, and so forth. Along the way, our own capacities for happiness and meaning and goodness and beauty and purpose all expand — that is what we receive when we give sociality.

But if you ask me, all of us need to get as much of that as we can, as fast as we can. We were put here to love. As much of life, in all its forms, as we can hold, in the achingly brief time we have. That is what “we’re social beings” means in the most essential, simplest form.

,

That is the only way — the only way — our civilization, which our lives depend on, has a tiny hope of succeeding. In other words, everything this century depends on sociality. Not just sociality among us humans — which gives us the power to care for one another. But the truest, deepest kind of sociality — the one that connects us to all life — only that gives us the power to nourish and heal the world millennia of human violence have left a smoking, ruined wreck.

,

He was also a booster of the city of Las Vegas, where Zappos is headquartered, and a thought leader in entrepreneurship and business, starting with the publication of his book, Delivering Happiness.

,

We were always meant to be part of all of life, as much of life as we could befriend and love and know and hold and wonder in awe at. Not just to slay each other symbolically with more money to buy more stuff with to fill the gaping hole in our souls. That hole is there in the first place because we live in denial of who we really are. Social animals, searching desperately, before our last breaths are taken, for a friend, a lover, a partner in crime.

,

But sociality is also what connects us beyond other human beings. To all of life. The forest, river, tree, lion, puppy, reef. Our challenge this century — our greatest one — is not being a race of stupid, violent predators any more, consuming all those things, but caring for them, healing them, nurturing them, replenishing them.

,

If we follow that path, then maybe we have a fighting chance as a civilization. But it will require radical change. If I say to you — how many relationships do you have with trees, you’ll look at me like I’m crazy. Am I? Then why are you so unhappy? Why do you think having relationships with fake bits of people over a smartphone is better than with real living things? Your sociality has been warped, twisted, commodified, and spat out, and you don’t even know it.

,

There are many good reasons to remember Tony Hsieh, but I keep thinking about one in particular: an unusual employment policy at Zappos, where Hsieh was CEO for two decades.

ably, too big to be used. It might be why you’re seeing some fruit-based companies releasing ‘Mini’ versions of their flagship devices. While sure, it’s nice to have a big screen to watch things on and read more, but sometimes this can mean simple things like messaging friends and taking a photo with one hand are very difficult, especially for people with smaller hands, like women.,

That’s the truth of us. And the sad, sad truth that Covid revealed about the West these days is that it still doesn’t get that. Does the East? A little bit more so, at least.

,

But if you ask me, all of us need to get as much of that as we can, as fast as we can. We were put here to love. As much of life, in all its forms, as we can hold, in the achingly brief time we have. That is what “we’re social beings” means in the most essential, simplest form.

,

Who are we? Why are we here? We are social beings. But understand what that really means. Not Instagram and Facebook and Tinder. Those are ways that sociality is warped and twisted, its dark side exploited, just like authoritarianism and fascism are other ways. “We are social beings” means something much, much deeper than that. It means our happiness, fulfillment, worth, purpose, all depend on our relationships, ties, and bonds. If we don’t have many — especially real ones — if the ones we have are abusive and violent and predatory, like in America, we will end up unhappy, miserable, weak, and so stupid that maybe, like Americans, we believe in our exploitation. And our societies collapse, and our lives right along with them.
