While at UC Davis, he continued to work on molecular biology research, working in various groups, including one headed by professor Robert Yollethick. While at this point in his career, he had already received several patents on various techniques in cancer research, most commonly in the area of oncology. Also, while at UC Davis, he founded a company called KEG Laboratories, where he worked with the radiation oncologist Joseph Kovacich. He left KEG in 1996 to start his own business, working on various imaging technologies designed to help in the diagnosis and treatment of various cancers and their diseases.

David Geffen is a pediatrics specialist. He is currently on faculty at the Geffen School of Medicine in Los Angeles. One of the things that are credited with helping to launch his career is his relationship with the late, great Dr Mario Molina. Dr Molina was a well-respected pediatrician who also did work as an HIV/AIDS researcher. It was Dr Molina that suggested Geffen take a pediatric residency, which led to him being a practising Pediatric Oncologist and practising in both Southern California and Hawaii.
