New record, India records 270 thousand cases of Covid-19 in a day

new delhi - India has set a new record in daily cases of Covid-19. The total daily Covid-19 cases in India reached 270 thousand cases.

According to the Indian Ministry of Health, the total cases recorded in the past 24 hours were 273,810. This brings India's total cases to more than 15 million, coupting Brazil as the country with the second largest number of cases in the world, behind the United States (US).

"Deaths from Covid-19 also touched a new record with 1,619 deaths, to a total of 178,769 deaths from the virus," said India's Health Ministry, as reported by Al Arabiya on Monday (19/4/2021). Also read: Moving 18 times because the wife is afraid of cockroaches, this man wants a divorce

Last week, India announced that it was banning the export of the anti-viral drug Remedievir and active pharmaceutical ingredients amid growing demand. This step was taken after there was a drastic increase in cases of Covid-19 infection in the country.

"The Remdesivir (export) ban is in effect until the situation improves," said India's Health Ministry in a statement. Also read: Task Force: Indian Foreigners Most Detected by Covid-19, but Bring Negative Documents
Seven Indian companies have licensed the drug from Gilead Sciences, with an installed capacity of about 3.9 million units per month, for local use and for export to more than 100 countries.

Previously, India had also limited exports of the Covid-19 vaccine, as a result of the increase in cases. Vaccines originally allocated for delivery to other countries, either by bilateral agreement or via Covax, are diverted for use within the country.

# UK Investigates Covid-19 Variant Originating in India
LONDON - British health officials are investigating a variant of COVID-19 from India, but do not yet have enough evidence to classify it as a variant of concern (VOCs), said Susan Hopkins of Public Health England (PHE), Sunday (18/4/2021).

Speaking on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show, Hopkins said, "We haven't got enough data about this variant to be able to explain whether it's the variant that is of concern. We define it as the variant under investigation (VUI)."

India is hit by the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic

For the second time since the Covid-19 pandemic began, rural migrants in India flock to buses and trains to return to their homes as big cities like Delhi and Mumbai reimpose restrictions to control a record rise in infections.

Just a few months ago, millions of migrant workers flocked to the big cities to work in factories, restaurants and markets that started operating again following the India-wide lockdown that was imposed in March last year.

But once again they are wracked by massive layoffs amid restrictions in major cities as India has been rocked by the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

In recent days, daily infections in India have surpassed 200,000 cases, the world's highest and double the numbers at the peak of the first wave in September.

On Sunday, the health ministry reported 261,394 cases, a record record, and cities such as Delhi and Mumbai, which host millions of rural migrant workers, were hit the hardest.

It looks like the pendulum has swung to the other side since the start of the year, when infection cases decreased and fueled optimism that the pandemic is over in India, and hopes are emerging that the economy, battered by a lengthy lockdown, is starting to recover.

India's big cities are starting to return to normal as consumers flock to shopping centers and restaurants, and people are starting to head to vacation spots and businesses are resurgent.

The cities are now silent again. Delhi imposes a curfew until the end of the month, Mumbai closes most industries and markets and halts all construction activities.
The number of poor people in India, those who earn only USD2 (approximately Rp.29,000) or less per day or less, is estimated to have increased by 75 million people due to the recession caused by Covid-19, according to findings from the PEW Research Center. That figure represents 60% of the increase in global poverty.

However, even though India is hit by this severe Covid-19 wave, British PM Boris Johnson will continue to travel to India.
British Environment Minister George Eustice confirmed that. "For something like this, I would argue, yes it is. But, to be sure, steps are being taken to ensure this trip is safe from the attack of COVID. "

The Minister of Environment added that this trip was important for business and political reasons.
