"Shock Wave 2" Movie Review Action Blockbuster, The Action Was Tense

You can go in cold to this unlinked sequel to 2017's Shock Wave, also written and directed by Herman Yau and starring Andy Lau but featuring a different storyline and new characters, and still be blown away by the Hong Kong actioner.

A disgruntled former bomb disposal officer Poon (Lau), who awakes from a coma with amnesia, becomes a fugitive when the police suspect him of being involved with a criminal terrorist organisation that has been setting off a series of bomb explosions in Hong Kong.

What follows are twists aplenty, bringing him in contact with his former partner (Lau Ching Wan) and ex-girlfriend (Ni Ni), and you are never quite sure which side Poon is on until the bitter end.

A ticking time bomb himself and an anti-hero torn between loyalty and resentment, the ageless Lau turns in a multi-layered performance enhanced with such physical demands that he truly deserves the title of Asia's Tom Cruise.

Perhaps the only thing more unbelievable - and distracting - than the 59-year-old's poreless complexion is how Poon can outrun squads of cops multiple times with a prosthetic leg.

And you know Shock Wave 2 means business when it opens with the harrowing destruction of the Hong Kong International Airport by a nuclear bomb, after which the action and tension come fast and furious.

‘Shock Wave 2’ features award-winning actors Andy Lau and Sean Lau. The Hong Kong action film "Shock Wave 2" hit the big screens in Taiwan on Thursday (Dec. 31).

Directed by Herman Yau (邱禮濤) and produced by and starring Andy Lau (劉德華), the film has made NT$1.8 billion (USD$64 million) since it first landed in China's theaters on Dec. 25., according to Sky Films. The box office of "Shock Wave 2" is expected to surpass its predecessor, "Shock Wave," which came out in 2017.

For the first time in 18 years, Andy Lau is once again collaborating with Sean Lau (劉青雲). The new film has been nominated by the Hong Kong Film Awards in seven categories.

Lau takes on the role of a former bomb disposal officer who lost his left calf in an accident. The veteran actor's performance as a disabled person has won praise from audiences.

Lau shared that he used director Yau, who is a polio survivor, as his reference: “I observed how he walked and moved when I played my part."

The film features a nuclear bombing of Hong Kong International Airport, among other adrenaline-fueled scenes.

"The plot of the story made me so excited that I wanted to run around in the theater," said Taiwanese actor Chris Wang (王宥勝) after the premiere. "Shock Wave 2" was released in theaters in Taiwan on Dec. 31.

The film, which was directed by Herman Yau, tells the story of a series of bomb explosions that occurred in Hong Kong and caused fear among the public. Former bomb disposal officer Poon Sing-fung (Andy Lau) falls into a coma at the crime scene and becomes the most wanted criminal after police suspect his links to a criminal organization.

Poon Sing-fung is finally imprisoned but he runs away and asks his friend, bomb squad officer Tung Cheuk-man (Sean Lau) to help him. That's because Ponn Sing-fung feels innocent and the two embark on an action-packed adventure.

Despite the long lapse of time, the two actors share the same philosophy on set. Andy said that chemistry between individuals is sometimes magical. The 59-year-old actor exclaimed that there would be unexpected surprises from every player in the film. It is known that Andy and Sean last starred in the film Fat Choi Spirit, which aired in 2002.

"Every time I work with a different actor, it's similar to how I felt the strong screen vibrations back then with Fat Gor and others," said Andy Lau.

The film is said to have dangerous scenes such as gunfire, explosions to battle scenes. According to Sean, the most impressive scene was when the two of them were in the delivery van and then lifted to a height of eight floors.

“Even though the director told us (Andy Lau and Sean Lau) that we would be appointed, he didn't say how tall. During filming, it was only '1,2,3!' And we went up. I thought we were going to lift slowly and the scene would take a few tries, but it was finished in just one shot, "said Sean.

Meanwhile, Andy said that security is much tighter in this film. He said that it was very different from filming in the past where the actors would have risked their lives.

“Even though it was very fast, the action director and team were very thorough and would check the wire for damage before the scene. In the past, shooting was like risking your life, now I feel really safe and cared for, ”said Andy Lau.

This film was originally set to air in July but was hampered by the corona virus pandemic (COVID-19). As a result, the film Shock Wave 2, starring Andy Lau and Sean Lau, is scheduled for release on December 24, 2020.
