The Mandalika Grand Prix Association (MGPA) as the organizer of the Indonesian MotoGP has decided that it will focus on completing the Mandalika Circuit and be able to hold a World Motorcycle Racing Championship race in the 2022 season.

In the MotoGP program at Trans7, Valentino Rossi was also asked about his opinion regarding the Mandalika Circuit which will be used as a venue for the Indonesian MotoGP race. 

The 42-year-old racer also has a funny answer. Valentino Rossi said that because the circuit was near the sea, he could jump right into the water when it was hot.

"As you say, there are so many challenges on this circuit. Because the weather in Indonesia is very hot. I competed in Indonesia in 1996 and 1997, I remember the weather was hotter than Malaysia," said Valentino Rossi when interviewed by Lucy Wiryono.

"So it will be very difficult. Moreover, the track will be very close to the sea. If it is very hot, then we can jump into the sea," smiled the nine-time world champion.

Fast Tracks

It's just that if you look at the track layout, Valentino Rossi thinks that the Mandalika Circuit for Indonesian MotoGP has fast characteristics.

"I think this is going to be a very interesting circuit. I've seen the layout and the video of the track. It looks like there are some bends to go fast," said Valentino Rossi

"It would be fun to race. But to understand the circuit as a whole, the track must be finished first. And I went straight on the bike to try it," he said.

It's just not known whether Valentino Rossi can finish in the Indonesian MotoGP if it takes place in the 2022 season. Because his contract with Petronas Yamaha SRT will expire at the end of this season.

 The visit of the Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) and Dorna Sports in the context of pre-homologation inspections at the Mandalika Circuit, Lombok, Wednesday (7/4/2021) made PT Pembangunan Pariwisata Indonesia or Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) had to speed up the construction of the circuit before the middle of the year.

During the inspection process, representatives of FIM and Dorna Sports were warmly welcomed by the President Director of PT Indonesian Tourism Development (ITDC), Abdulbar M. Mansour, and the CEO of the Mandalika Grand Prix Association, Ricky Baheramsjah. The group said they were impressed with the development of the Mandalika Circuit project.

"We thank FIM and Dorna for the visit of FIM and Dorna to Mandalika and are very pleased that the technical inspections have gone well as they expected. With the certainty of the timing, we ensure that we remain focused on completing the construction of the Mandalika International Circuit and maximizing the potential that will be obtained from it. this world-class sporting event, "said ITDC Managing Director, Abdulbar M. But what is clear, they can no longer relax. Because in the middle of the year, the homologation results will come out, and FIM and Dorna Sports will come back again to monitor the progress of the Mandalika Circuit.

Currently, the construction process of the Mandalika Circuit focuses on working asphalt on the track, drainage, and other supporting structures such as gravel beds and concrete barriers. The rest is left to install facilities such as the tribune and paddock.

"Of course we still have a lot to do, such as permanent infrastructure in June or July, but at the same time we have a lot of temporary infrastructures to build at the Mandalika Circuit," said Ricky Baheramsjah, CEO of MGPA.

Indonesian MotoGP Held in March
Although it is canceled holding the MotoGP series in 2021, there is a possibility that the Mandalika Circuit will be used at the end of the year. If MotoGP can hold a series in Southeast Asia towards the end of 2021, the MotoGP team will seek a pre-season test in Mandalika in that period, in preparation for the circuit's participation in the 2022 calendar.

Talking about the race performance, from this inspection it is said that Mandalika will continue to host the WorldSBK championship on November 14, 2021, under the name FIM Motul Superbike.
