White House says the US will soon impose new sanctions on Russia

The United States (US) could announce additional sanctions against Russia in the near future. This was stated by the White House Press Secretary, Jen Psaki.

Responding to a question when Washington would announce whether there would be additional sanctions against Russia, Psaki said that
"This is an ongoing process, and as you know, that process of course includes reviewing, not only their involvement in the 2020 elections, but also the reward for killing US troops and the SolarWinds attack, there are a number of components," Psaki said.

"We want to give the team, cyber team, national security team, time to complete the process," he continued in a statement, as reported by Tass on Sunday (28/2/2021)
He said the final decision regarding the sanctions, regarding the type and timing, rests with the US President, Joe Biden. However, he believes, the decision will be made in the coming weeks.

"Of course, as in any case, the presidential decree, has options, I must say, to respond in a manner and time that he chooses, visible and invisible. But I expect in a few weeks, not months, before we make any conclusions," he said.

An activist group, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) said as of Saturday (20/2) 569 people had been arrested, charged or convicted in connection with the coup.

In another incident in Yangon on Saturday night, a night watchman was shot and killed. Burma's Radio Free Asia service said police had shot him but did not know why.
Communities have installed more guards for fear of being attacked by security forces.
Since the nationwide protests began two weeks ago, authorities in several cities have deployed tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets against demonstrators. However, it was reported that a number of incidents involved live bullet fire.

"Two people were shot and killed and 20 others were injured," said Ko Aung, leader of the volunteer emergency services of Parahita Darhi.

An anti-coup protester who was shot in the head during the 9 February demonstrations in Naypyidaw, died on Friday (19/2). The doctor treating him has confirmed to AFP that his gunshot wound was from a live bullet.

Furthermore, the military said a policeman died of his injuries due to the demonstration.
